Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is an exciting movement in language education.  It widens the opportunities for English teachers and researchers to explore the curriculum, course planning and implementation of ESP education. However, there are several problems in teaching ESP. one of the most problems is students’ engagement in the class because they felt learning English unrelated to their major. Therefore, this research concerns to investigate the implementation of Lesson Study in Teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) to sharpen the students’ critical thinking. Lesson Study has been a precious motion for recent decades, principally for the sake of teachers’ professional development and students’ critical thinking. This research involved 5 ESP teachers. They acquired equal chance to be a teacher model and observer in the LS process. This research conducted in 2 cycles with three phases; Plan, Do, and See. This research employed observation and document analysis as the tools to collect the data. This Lesson study was implemented into two stages, planning and implementation. However, it can encourage the students to participate actively along the learning process because cycle 1 can provide student’s participation 90% and in cycle 2, 95% of students involved in the learning process.

Abstract

In this millennial era, Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) is regarded as an important theme in education. The theme has emerged in all learning activities as it enables students to use critical thinking in their problem-solving. HOTS cannot be separated from Bloom’s Taxonomy. HOTS is important to be integrated with classes in diverse school settings. Therefore, the aim of this research is to draw the implementation of HOTS through Lesson Study. The research was conducted in one of the Islamic schools in south Thailand. The school is an Islamic Boarding School that integrates Islamic values in its learning and teaching process. Based on a preliminary interview with the school administrator, the students are coming from different economical backgrounds. As the consequence, they have a different level of cognitive and linguistic competence. Moreover, the present research was utilized a qualitative approach to describe the implementation of HOTS through Lesson Study. To acquire adequate data, participatory observation, Focused group discussion (FGD), and document analysis were used as the research instrument. The result shows that HOTS in this school in several activities such as game competitions, group discussion, and roleplay. It can guide students to expose their English skills

Abstract

Life Skill Education (LSE) equips individual to survive in the future. In addition, the importance of life skill cannot be neglected to assist young people to deal with challenges in life by having a skill that enable, equip and empower them with necessary behaviors. LSE is not only applicable in formal, but also informal education. In regards to that, this study tries to investigate the implementation of life skill in non-formal education setting. This qualitative study was conducted in two private libraries in Malang, TBM Wacan and TBM Merdesa with 10 members for each. Participatory observation and document analysis were equipped to gather the data. The result shows that three  aspects  in  life  skill,  which are  thinking  skill,  emotional  skill  and also social skill were explored. These aspects were then is formed in various activities such as poster creation, language games, disaster mitigation simulation, and role play.

Abstract

ABSTRAKSekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK) telah digalakkan oleh pemerintah beberapa tahun ini karena SMK diharapkan menjadi salah satu solusi bagi permasalahan pengangguran di Indonesia. SMK mampu menyediakan sumber daya manusia (SDM) yang sesuai dengan tuntutan kebutuhan dunia industri. Oleh sebab itu, program pengabdian ini ditujukan untuk memberikan pelatihan dan paraktek langsung bagi guru SMK dalam mengembangkan bahan ajar Bahasa Inggris. Pengabdian ini berkerjasama dengan SMK Muhammdiyah 1 Kota Batu karena sekolah tersebut mempunyai beberapa permasalahan. Peramasalahan pertama adalah terkait dengan fasilitas yang terbatas. Kedua, jumlah guru Bahasa Inggris yang terbatas, hanya ada dua guru Bahasa Inggris. Ketiga, motivasi siswa yang rendah di dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris. Terakhir adalah materi Bahasa Inggris yang masih General English (Bahasa Inggris Umum). Padahal, Siswa SMK seharusnya mendapatkan pelajaran Bahasa Inggris berbasis ESP. Selanjutnya, pengabdian ini dilaksanakan dengan dua tahap. Tahapan pertama adalah perencanaan, sedangkan tahapan yang kedua adalah pelaksanaan. Fokus kedua tahapan ini adalah memberikan pelatihan dan pendampingan dalam pembuatan materi Bahasa Inggris. Pelatihannya dilaksanakan selama satu hari, sedangkan pendampingannya dilaksanakan selama 3 bulan.  Hasil dari program menunjukkan bahwa guru mempunyai pemahaman dan kemampuan dalam pembuatan materi Bahasa Inggris yang sesuai dengan Vokasi dalam bentuk sebuah modul Bahasa Inggris, serta antusiasme para guru did dalam mengikuti sangat bagus bisa dilihat dari partisipasi mereka di dalam program ini. Hasil dari pengabdian ini diharapkan bisa memberikan contoh nyata bagi praktisi pendidikan dalam mengembangkan bahan ajar Bahasa Inggris bagi siswa SMK.. Kata kunci: pengembangan guru; pengembangan bahan ajar; sekolah menengah kejuruan. ABSTRACTVocational school has been promoted massively by government. Vocational school has been expected to be one of the solutions for the job problem in Indonesia. It provides human resources for the industries which is required vocational school to facilitate the students ready to work in certain industries. Therefore, The aim of this community service is to provide the teacher’s development in constructing material for vocational school in term of workshop and best practices because there is very limited support for the teacher to develop their own material which are suitable with the student’s need. Moreover, this community selected SMK Muhammadiyah I Batu as the partner due to four issues. The first issue is related to teaching facilities. They are lack of facilities. The second issue is limited English teacher. They just have two English teachers. The third challenge is student’s low motivation. Most of the students are reluctant to join with English class. The last is regarding to the teaching material. The English teachers use general English which is supposed to equip stuendts with English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Moreover, this community service was implemented in two phases, planning and implementation. These stages focused on administering teachers with workshop which was implemented in a day and supervision to create appropriate English materials for three months. The results of this program shows that teachers have knowledge and skills to conduct good and appropriate materials for vocational school. The results are expected to provide best practice in conducting  material development for vocational schools. Keywords: teacher’s development; material development; vocational school.

Abstract

This article explores the need for English as a mean of communication for the tourism industry in Malang. Since the need for English speaking skills is immensely demanded, this community service program was proposed to provide a ready-use module to facilitate the locals practising their English speaking skills. Hence, this study reported on-going project designing English for Specific Purposes (ESP) materials for the tourism industry in Malang. It is implemented in three stages: planning stage, implementation stage and evaluation. Specifically, the target learners are Karang Taruna members who are working in tourism near Kelurahan Jodipan. Since there are many thematic villages there, the learning content is designed contextually with the local wisdom and local culture. Hence, it is projected to help the locals provide better services for their visitors, especially foreign visitors.
