Abstract

The use of mobile technology for education is on the rise across the world, especially in Indonesia. However, there are concerns in making such an educational revolution as mobile technology may introduce negative side effects to the Indonesian students. Also, only a few studies have discussed the use of mobile technology in Indonesian secondary schools. Those circumstances potentially make many stakeholders doubt the proper implementation of mobile technology-based learning and the possible challenges, especially in English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom. Thus, this paper is aimed to provide theoretical insights into the implementation of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) for secondary school students in EFL classrooms. A secondary source analysis through systematic review was employed to generate the findings, focusing on MALL and EFL primary research and government documents related to education in secondary schools. Based on the findings, this paper offers an improved teaching and learning approach based on collaborative learning and task-based language teaching (TBLT) to facilitate better implementation and integration of MALL in EFL classrooms. In addition, the findings also show possible challenges during the implementation of MALL in Indonesia for future considerations, such as the technology readiness of EFL stakeholders and teachers’ pedagogical issues related to mobile learning. Lastly, this paper is expected to raise awareness of MALL opportunities and open more paths for more primary research regarding the implementations of MALL in Indonesian EFL classrooms.

This paper presents the development of instructional media for an English-speaking club to improve students’ speaking and general communication skills as part of a community service program. This was conducted as an attempt to address a lack of English communication competence of students at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The project is part of the collaboration between the English Language Education Department (ELED) of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) and SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The project involved ELED lecturers, students, and English teachers and students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The chosen topics for the English club are relevant to students’ everyday lives, complemented with corresponding English language-related games. For that, a module was created for ten sessions with three specific topics (English vlog, speech, and storytelling), complemented with the digitalized media for the games in each session. This paper presents a detailed account of the preparation, development, and evaluation of the developed module and media for the speaking club, emphasizing the collaborative nature of all involved in the project. Lessons learned are discussed and highlighted for other English language teachers and educators who wish to conduct the same project in their respective institutions.

Abstract

Background: Many Indonesian universities use Moodle-based LMS as suggested by the Ministry of Education. The study aimed at examining English Speaking course lecturers’ perception of Moodle-based LMS. Two important questions to dig out lecturers’ perceptions included supporting features in Moodle LMS preferred by lecturers in Speaking courses and how they perceive Moodle as the main LMS for Speaking courses. Methodology: Qualitative descriptive was utilized. Three Speaking course lecturers of English Language Education Department were selected based on some criteria. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data. The interview questions covered benefits of Moodle-based LMS in speaking class, support of LMS in learning speaking and learning autonomy, and possible problems during the use of LMS. The data were then transcribed into textual forms and analyzed narratively. Findings: Several menus preferred by lecturers were assignment, page, and quiz. There were also less preferred menus on Moodle, including video conference, attendance, and writing-oriented activities (i.e., chat and forum) menus. It is also found that participants held both positive and negative views towards Moodle. Conclusion: Major findings of the study suggest that Moodle offered a number of menus that were considered beneficial for the participants in conducting their classes. Generally, they also held positive perceptions towards the LMS and suggest some room for improvement for the LMS. Originality: Little attention has been paid to Moodle-based LMS is carried out and the lecturers’ perception on its implementation in the speaking classes. Thus, the current study is deemed necessary.
