Abstract

The ongoing debate concerning the best method to apply in language teaching, especially in English as Second Language andForeign Language context has been lasting for about forty years now. The first side of debaters is the supporters of form-focusedlanguage teaching method, and the other side is the supporters of function-focused method. In teaching practice, the form-focused methodviews teaching grammar and all its grammatical rules as an absolute requirement while the function-focused method believes thatacquiring good communicative skill in target language is the ultimate goal in second language learning.  Both sides claim that the methodthey use in the teaching practice as the best way to make learners acquire the target language well. Despite the advantages offered by eachmethod, some researchers, however, find out that each method is actually not free from weaknesses. By realizing the weakness of eachmethod, it seems rational for not standing on one method only in the language teaching practice. Perhaps, by combining the two methodsin the teaching practice, language teacher will gain advantages and omit weaknesses owned by each method. A new method can be formedby applying formal instruction in communicative activities.

Abstract

This writing reports the finding of a quantitative study which sought to find out the awareness of Indonesian  students toward autonomous  learning.  This was a survey to twelve Indonesian  students at their first year at Flinders  University. The survey used adapted and revised questionnaire  about autonomous  learning which was answered on-line by respondents. Survey Gizmo was utilized for this purpose. Analysis of the data by using SPSS ver. 15.0 showed that most Indonesian students from various different background  such as gender, age, hometown, occupation,  and  field of study have already aware of autonomous  learning  at almost the same level. Little different of autonomous  learning  level appeared  on the comparison  to hometowns of respondents.  Respondents from Java  had higher level of autonomous  learning than those from outside Java. Since this study involved small proportion of Indonesian  students in a specific place of Australia, similar study needs to be conducted with wider scope to find out the real condition.

Abstract

This pilot study aimed to investigate the effects of two classroom instructions on the complexity, accuracy, and fluency of EFL learners’ speaking. The first one involved implicit task-based instruction with meaning-focused pedagogic tasks. The second instruction reduced learners’ practice time but complemented it with explicit strategy-based instruction (SBI) to raise their metacognitive awareness in planning, monitoring, and evaluating their speech. Participants in the explicit instruction group learned to practice three specific strategies, while the first group had only more practice opportunities. The study involved 16 English students from a third-tier university in Indonesia. Audio recordings of each participant’s oral presentations during the pre-test and the post-test were transcribed and coded for non-parametric analysis. The findings revealed that both instructions had a comparable impact on EFL learners' oral performance by improving complexity but not accuracy and fluency. There was also a possible trade-off effect found in participants’ performance. The study findings could provide a basis for EFL teachers to use either explicit strategy instruction or implicit instruction for their speaking class.

Abstract

This quasi-experimental study investigated the effects of self-regulated strategy development (SRSD) instruction on learners’ autonomy and writing proficiency in a university-level English program in Indonesia. Two intact classes of English students were involved in the study. They were in their second semester learning English Writing, a compulsory topic in their department. Within one semester, participants in the experiment group were trained with SRSD to improve their autonomous learning and writing proficiency. A comparison group learning the same topic without the SRSD training was also assigned. Data were gathered in two ways: a questionnaire for assessing learners’ autonomy and pretest and posttest writing tasks for assessing writing proficiency. Jamovi Software, an open-access statistical tool, was used to analyse the data. The results showed that the experiment groups' learning autonomy and writing proficiency improved significantly and outperformed the control group. The effect sizes of the analysis ranged from medium to large. The study’s results contribute to research and practice on EFL learners’ autonomy and writing development by strengthening claims regarding the relationship between SRSD instruction, autonomy, and writing proficiency.
