Abstract

Indonesian communication scholars often consider mass media institutions as a manifestation of the public sphere. This article analyzes Kompas Daily Newspaper’s rule of the statement on the public sphere and their knowledge that regulate how they produced the public sphere texts. Using qualitative content analysis of Kompas’ texts on the public sphere about the Indonesian Reformation, this study found the dispersion in the rule of Kompas’ statement and their knowledge of the public sphere. From 1995 to the reformation, the discussions of the public sphere in Kompas always included the term citizen and focused on the issue of people's access to the public sphere limited by the state. This year's criticism was on the commodification and commercialization of public space. Today's knowledge of public space was built on the concept of the public sphere. In the early 2000s, the discussion of the public sphere in Kompas no longer used the term citizen and was replaced by the term public or residents. Even though it looks more complex, it is limited only to the problems of the townspeople. This rule is derived from the concept of public space, which is the basis for understanding the public sphere.

Abstract

Abstract

The phenomenon of thrifting or buying used clothes is becoming increasingly popular among young people and has attracted public attention because it is considered as one of the sustainable efforts by applying the principles of sustainable fashion. In interpreting this, the researcher then chose the Tukar Baju community as the object of research as well as a representation of environmental activists engaged in the realm of sustainable fashion. This research uses a qualitative method with an ethnographic type of research to see the meaning of thrifting from Tukar Baju activists and how the process of interaction and exchange of meaning between individuals can strengthen the meaning of thrifting as a form of sustainable fashion effort. Researchers found a pyramid concept of "Buyerarchy of need" in interpreting thrifting as a continuous effort and thrifting is at level 4 and which means thrifting is not the only one. So, to strive for sustainable fashion through thrifting, people need to be smart and not impulsive consumers.

Abstract

This article explain the dominant ideology shaped of contemporary Indonesian student press. The study took the banning of Poros, Ahmad Dahlan University's Students Press in 2016, as the case. By using a three-dimensional analysis of Fairclough's critical discourse analysis, this paper questions three things; what is the dominant ideology of the student press represented in the text? How is this dominant ideology also shape the process of producing text? How does the ideology relate to the socio-cultural history of the Indonesian student press? This study found that the dominant ideology of contemporary students press was a 'journalism laboratory', which was actually an extension of the New Order's program to de-politising Indonesian student movement. Keywords: ideology, student press, discourse, Fairclough.

Abstract

Islamic centers emerged when Muslims in the West had difficulties to build a mosque. As a majority, Indonesian Muslim communities do not need to adopt the concept of Western Islamic Center.  Nevertheless, establishing Islamic Center is quite popular among Indonesian Muslims. This paper argues that the establishment of Islamic Center is a practice of post-Islamism in Indonesia, in which Islam is interpreted in a specific way that juxtaposes religiosity and leisure, mixes between ‘the sacred’ and ‘the profane’. Taking the Mataram Islamic Center as a case study, this study explores how discourse of the Islamic Center shapes its establishment. Applying critical discourse analysis, this study takes several units of analysis, i.e. the mediation practices of the center and the visiting practices of the visitors. This study finds that there are two prominent discourses, namely the center as a religious space and the center as a tourist space, both of which do not defeat each other. Keywords: Islamic center, critical discourse analysis, post-Islamism, space mediation.

Abstract

The Cicakal Girang village, known as the village where the Muslim Baduy lives, has different religious practices from the Baduy. Obedience to Baduy customs is very loose in this village, which the Baduy indigenous community permits. This study investigates the cultural discourse producing the Cicakal Girang village and the reproduction of such discourse as well. The empirical data were collected through fieldwork and analyzed with the cultural discourse analysis method. This study finds that the Cicakal Girang and its Islamic activities practice the existing discourse system, namely the Cicakal Girang as a place of the 'penghulu ratu’ (the queen) of the Baduy community. Such discourse situates the Cicakal Girang as a connection space for the Baduy community with the outside world. It is reproduced in the interaction between Cicakal Girang and the Baduy community. Keywords: Baduy, Cicakal Girang, communication geography, cultural discourse analysis

Abstract

Gita Savitri Devi's Youtube channel often discusses women's issues, one of which is entitled "Equal? Women are still victims of sexism!" the comments on the video contain not only expression comments but also sexism, but some women do not realize the existence of sexism comments because of their common understanding of it. Through descriptive qualitative research with a netnographic approach and collecting several data through in-depth interviews with Gita Savitri Devi fans and using the concept of texture and reception, the researchers got several findings where the reception of women in comments on Youtube is a space of expression. The meaning of comments by women towards expression comments is in the dominant hegemonic reading and the negotiated reading, while sexism comments are in the negotiated and opposed reading. Women stated that the image of women in the comments was quite in line with the picture of real life or experiences that women had experienced.

Abstract

Gojek driver base is a new social space formed by the tension between the development of communication technology and Indonesian drivers' work practices. It also creates further implications, namely the new meaning of a different space and new working model. Unfortunately, the communication dynamic in this event has not received much attention from communication scholars in Indonesia. Using the ethnography of space, this study found three things. First, Gojek drivers ambivalently interpret their base as 'office', but they did not consider their actions at the base as a work activity. This mystifies Gojek free drivers as 'casual workers'. Second, the absence of bases in the representation of space in the Gojek application forces driver to producing these bases independently. The cellular navigation, which gave rise to egocentric cartographic readings, became Gojek's instrument to intervene in a concrete space by making the driver the anchor of the production of a new social space. Third, the drivers then live the base with the image of brotherhood between the members of the base. They even become workers who can regulate themselves, which is in line with the logic of efficiency by digital capitalism such as Gojek.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper advocates for a materialist approach to studying communication in Indonesia. This paper questions the communication/media study approach in Indonesia, which only has two approaches when looking at the ontological reality of communication: message transmission or meaning production. This paper explains that these two approaches are not absolute truths. Both of these approaches are historical products and have contributed to the stagnation of communication studies, so an alternative approach, such as a materialist approach, is needed in communication studies. This paper then describes some of the initial ideas of the materialist approach which defines communication as the circulation of people, ideas, information and capital. Furthermore, this paper also shows the development of this approach in several regions such as Europe and North America, where communication studies are understood as studies of material realities that are neglected as objects of communication studies by the message transmission process approach and the meaning production approach. This paper then outlines several alternative syntheses for developing approaches in communication studies in Indonesia, including alternative fields proposed by North American scholars namely; political economy, technological infrastructure, space, body and discourse. As a recommendation, this paper calls on Indonesian communication scholars to discuss and practice a materialist approach so that their studies will not only be limited to issues of media content, meaning, or media-centric things.ABSTRAKTulisan ini adalah upaya mengadvokasi pendekatan materialist dalam studi komunikasi di Indonesia.
