Abstract

This research aims to improve speaking ability on speaking for specific purposes class of class A1 students of English Education Department students, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2012/2013. The effort which was done is using role-playing as a technique in teaching and learning activities. This collaborative and participative action research consisted of three cycles, with plan, action, observation, and reflection in each cycle. The participants were the students of class A1 of English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta. The data were collected by means of interviewing, recording technique, observing, and assessing. The qualitative data were analyzed through data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing, while the quantitative data was analyzed descriptively by counting the mean score and the score percentage of the result of the observation. The results of research show that using role-playing technique can improve students’ speaking ability on speaking for specific purposes class. It can be indicated by the improvement of the activity of speaking classroom English, the interaction between teacher and students, and the students and teacher’s attention. The improvement of speaking ability on classroom English is also supported by the improvement of students’ achievement in speaking performance to a mean score of 161,18 or 70,579% (cycle I), 176,31 or 76,956% (cycle II), and 198,16 or 85,797% (cycle III).

Abstract

The research aims at describing the implementation of inductive approach in pre-intermediate structure subject to English Education Study Program students. It describes how the response of the implementation of inductive approach through communicative activities to students of English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta.The research was done qualitatively. It included some actions. The actions were activities of teaching and learning processes by implementing inductive approach through some communicative activities in the classroom. The subject of this research was the students of English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta. The research data was analyzed qualitatively by using deep observation and interview. The result was represented descriptively.The result of the research was that the implementation of inductive approach through the communicative activities can (a) train students to be familiar with the rule of discovery; (b) exploit students’ greater degree of cognitive depth, (c) make the students are more active rather than being passive in the process, (d) involve students to collaboratively do problem solving, (e) involve students to get opportunity for extra language practice.

Abstract

This study aims to know the process of improving the writing skill of eight grade students at SMPN 14 Yogyakarta by using snakes and ladders game. The subjects of the study were the students of grade VIII B. They found difficulty in writing skills. The participants consisted of 32 students. The study was conducted in a classroom action research methodology. The data were collected through field notes, observation, interview and documentation. They were analyzed using descriptive qualitative. The result of the study shows that the process of teaching and learning in each cycle ran well by using snakes and ladders game. The indicators of achievement are students achieve higher the minimum standard score, use correct English structure, adopt a variety of English vocabulary, use appropriate punctuation, and write recount text appropriately. Those indicators of achievement obtain a successful result within 3 cycles. Based on the data analyses, there is an improvement in cycle 2 as many as 43.12% or at an average of 69.99. In cycle 3, the result increases up to 82.49 or 82.49%.

Abstract

In recent decades, investigation on students’ communication apprehension has emerged after being abandoned. It is believed classroom interaction in oral competency consists of students’ activities which mainly facilitate them to develop their communication skill. However, not all students have the same ability in communication. This study aims to investigate the students’ level of communication apprehension and their strategies used to overcome. The Personal Report of Communication Apprehension-24 instrument was used to measure students’ level of communication apprehension, and was analyzed with quantitative descriptive. Interview was conducted to find out their strategies to overcome it. The data collection method was carried out by distributing to 20 respondents, the English education department students of Universitas PGRI Yogyakarta. The obtained data in the form of questionnaire transcription was analyzed as its formula, while interview data was be analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The results showed that 5 students were categorized as low level, 3 students were in average level, and 12 students experienced in the high level. Efforts done by students to overcome the communication apprehension are cognitive, affective and social strategies. Based on the findings, it can be declared that majority of students experienced high level of communication apprehension and they preferred affective strategy to reduce communication apprehension. Findings of the research demanded the lecturers conduct meaningful activities such as group discussion to promote autonomous students’ communication practice.
