Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aims to improve speaking ability on speaking for specific purposes class of class A1 students of English Education Department students, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2012/2013. The effort which was done is using role-playing as a technique in teaching and learning activities. This collaborative and participative action research consisted of three cycles, with plan, action, observation, and reflection in each cycle. The participants were the students of class A1 of English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta. The data were collected by means of interviewing, recording technique, observing, and assessing. The qualitative data were analyzed through data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing, while the quantitative data was analyzed descriptively by counting the mean score and the score percentage of the result of the observation. The results of research show that using role-playing technique can improve students’ speaking ability on speaking for specific purposes class. It can be indicated by the improvement of the activity of speaking classroom English, the interaction between teacher and students, and the students and teacher’s attention. The improvement of speaking ability on classroom English is also supported by the improvement of students’ achievement in speaking performance to a mean score of 161,18 or 70,579% (cycle I), 176,31 or 76,956% (cycle II), and 198,16 or 85,797% (cycle III). Abstract

Public speaking is one of subjects must be attended by students of English Education Study Program. Several constrains were faced by students in performing public speaking. They were related to the limited learning tools and media, teaching methodology, and learning module. This research aims to analyze the effectiveness of public speaking subject module based on IT (Information Technology) applied in public speaking class of students of English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta. The module which was applied in public speaking subject used a media learning based on IT.This quantitative research consisted of four procedures. The procedures done were defining, designing, developing, and disseminating. The participants were the students of English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta. The data were collected through questionnaires to validate the module, to measure the practicability of the module, and to measure the effectiveness of the module. The module validity and practicability were analyzed qualitatively. Meanwhile, the effectiveness of the module was represented quantitatively.The research has been done. Module of public speaking subject is written well. The media for public speaking activity is represented into three themes. Each theme consists of four main activities. The first is listening activity. The second is giving opinion followed by comprehension task. The last activity is pronunciation task. The research test shows that the enthusiasm mean of using non based-IT media is 22, 33. The enthusiasm mean of using based-IT media is 27, 07. Based on the result of the test it can be concluded that using media based on IT is more valid, effective, and practical than using non-based IT media. It is because using media based on IT can fulfill students’ needs and can enhance students’ interest through learning material.

Abstract

Abstract The research aims at describing the implementation of inductive approach in pre-intermediate structure subject to English Education Study Program students. It describes how the response of the implementation of inductive approach through communicative activities to students of English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta. The research was done qualitatively. It included some actions. The actions were activities of teaching and learning processes by implementing inductive approach through some communicative activities in the classroom. The subject of this research was the students of English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta. The research data was analyzed qualitatively by using deep observation and interview. The result was represented descriptively. The result of the research was that the implementation of inductive approach through the communicative activities can (a) train students to be familiar with the rule of discovery; (b) exploit students’ greater degree of cognitive depth, (c) make the students are more active rather than being passive in the process, (d) involve students to collaboratively do problem solving, (e) involve students to get opportunity for extra language practice. Abstract

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk kesantunan berbahasa dalam unggahan berita dan komentar berita di Facebook. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif. Sumber data penelitian ini terbatas pada unggahan berita politik saja. Mengingat isi unggahan bermacam-macam dan jumlah unggahan setiap hari sangat banyak. Objek penelitian ini adalah percakapan di grup FB dengan subjek penelitian adalah percakapan berita politik. Metode pengumpulan data yang dipakai dalam penelitian ini adalah metode simak dan tulis, yakni dengan menyimak penggunaan bahasa. Pelaksanaan pengumpulan data pada penelitian ini adalah metode simak yang diwujudkan melalui teknik dasar dan teknik lanjutan. Teknik dasarnya disebut teknik sadap, sedangkan teknik lanjutannya adalah teknik simak bebas libat cakap dan teknik catat. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah ditemukannya berbagai bentuk kesantunan berbahasa dalam unggahan berita dan komentar berita politik nampak dalam empat hal, yaitu (1) penggunaan pronomina, (2) penggunaan bentuk ketidaklangsungan,  (3) penggunaan kata kunci, dan (4) penggunaan kalimat bersifat empati. Kata Kunci:  Kesantunan berbahasa, media sosial online, berita politik, facebookAbstract: The research aims to describe form of language politeness in uploaded news and comment in Facebook. This research was conducted in descriptive qualitative methodology. Source of research data was limited to political uploaded news in considering with the various uploaded content and the unlimited amount of uploaded news. The object of the research was the Facebook group conversation and the subject of the research was the political news conversation. The data collection method used the referral and writing methods. The implementation of data collection in this research was the referral method that was realized through basic and advanced techniques. The basic technique named tapping technique, while the advanced technique named free speech technique and note technique. The research results the discovery of various forms of language politeness in uploaded news and political news comment seen from four things, namely (1) the use of pronominal, (2) the use of form of continuity, (3) the use of key words, and (4) the use of empathetic sentences.  Key words: language politeness, online social media, political news, Facebook

Abstract

 The objective of this study is to test the learning model of blended learning by using social media as the learning tool to improve students’ participation and motivation in English subject. The study helps to solve problem of learning time restrictiveness by wielding students’ familiarity with internet technology used outside the classroom. The study implemented quasi-experiment to collect the data by using test and questionnaire. The respondents were students Elementary School Teacher Study Program of University of PGRI Yogyakarta. There were 70 students who were divided into two classes. A class was conducted as control group, while the other one was the experimental group. In the control group, English subject was taught by implementing conventional class model. The students in the experimental group were taught by blended learning which were the combination of classical and online models through social media. Social media used in this study were ones which supported learning process as sharing audio, video, as well as other online media. The writer chose Facebook as the media learning because all respondents used such kind of social media. The integration of social media as the effort to improve students’ participation and motivation remain successful. The general discussion is on the implementation of e-learning platform in learning process. According to survey, students were interested more in using social media compared with e-learning platform. The result of the study proved that English learning process by using blended learning method with social media helped students’ participation and motivation. The posttest result of the experiment class was better than the control class.

Abstract

The aims of the research are to identify the implementation of autonomous learning in teaching speaking for senior high school students in SMA N 3 Bantul and to find out the factors that influence lack of speaking. The research was conducted in descriptive qualitative methodology. The data findings were obtained from the observation, interview and documentation of senior high school students of SMA N 3 Bantul. The participants of the research were the students of X IPA 1 of SMA N 3 Bantul. The data was divided into four points as follows: 1) the characteristic of autonomous learner, 2) the work-cycle of autonomous learning class, 3) teacher-students’ role in autonomous learning, 4) the factors that influence lack of speaking performance of senior high school students. The results of the research were categorized into two aspects. First it is the characteristics of autonomous language learner namely having high motivation, strong curiosity, aware to use technology, having the high self-confidence. The work-cycle of autonomous classroom were plan, do, and evaluate. Teacher- learner role in autonomous class consisted of teacher as facilitator, teacher as motivator and teacher as the resource and responsibility for making good environment of autonomous class.  Second, it is the factors that influence lack of speaking performance namely incorrect pronunciation, low grammar comprehension, low vocabulary mastery, low motivation, less self-confident, nervous and speaking anxiety, and lack of language input.

Abstract

Kelompok Budidaya Mina Jaya berdiri pada tahun 2012 yang berlokasi di Dusun Gupakwarak Desa Sendangsari Kecamatan Pajangan Bantul. Kelompok Budidaya Mina Jaya membudidayakan jenis ikan gurame, ikan nila dan ikan lele. Ketiga jenis ikan dipilih oleh kelompok budidaya karena masa panen yang cukup singkat yaitu enam bulan untuk jenis ikan nila dan gurame serta tiga bulan untuk jenis ikan lele. Tujuan dari pengabdian di Kelompok Budidaya Mina Jaya Dusun Gupakwarak adalah memberikan pemahaman tentang promosi melalui website, peningkatan motivasi dan kreatifitas anggota. Metode yang digunakan pada Pendampingan Promosi Berbasis Web di Kelompok Budidaya Mina Jaya Dusun Gupakwarak antara lain mengadakan ceramah dan diskusi, mengadakan pelatihan/workshop dan evaluasi. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian dapat membantu meningkatkan kemampuan penggunaan web untuk meningkatkan informasi dan promosi produk yang dihasilkan oleh Kelompok Budidaya Mina Jaya Dusun Gupakwarak.

Abstract

Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan (1) memberikan pembimbingan dan penyuluhan kepada para ibu anggota dasawisma Amanah di Gemahan Ringinhajo Bantul Yogyakarta dalam pembinaan karakter anak-anak melalui pengetahuan dan pemahaman tentang pentingnya komunikasi dengan anak menggunakan bahasa yang baik dan pemanfaatan system teknologi komunikasi yang bijaksana dalam penanaman karakter bagi anak, (2) memberikan pemahaman kepada ibu tentang pemanfaatan gadged bagi anak dengan bijaksana. Pada dasarnya, komunikasi yang baik kepada anak-anak di rumah merupakan salah satu cara yang sangat efektif dalam memupuk dan mendasari karakter anak.Pengabdian ini menggunakan  metode berupa pendampingan dan pembimbingan dalam menggunakan bahasa komunikasi yang baik kepada anak-anak sebagai upaya penanaman karakter bagi anak-anak. Penanaman karakter melalui sistem komunikasi yang baik antara ibu dan anak. Diskusi interaktif dilakukan oleh nara sumber dengan para ibu agar masalah-masalah yang dihadapi dapat terpecahkan dengan baik. Selain itu, pendampingan dilakukan dengan tujuan meminimalkan pengaruh buruk system informasi melalui penggunaan gadged di kalangan masyarakat. Penyuluhan ditekankan pada pentingnya system komunikasi yang konsisten dan bermakna kepada para ibu khususnya para ibu anggota dasawisma Amanah di Gemahan Ringinharjo Bantul. Penyuluhan dan pendampingan berisi materi tentang penggunaan gadged yang bijaksana agar terhindar dari pengaruh buruk dari informasi-informasi yang tidak baik untuk dikonsumsi oleh anak-anak. Hasil penyuluhan dan pendampingan yang dilakukan mampu meningkatkan kesadaran para ibu terhadap pentingnya penggunaan bahasa ibu sebagai bahasa komunikasi sehari-hari. Pengabdian ini juga berpengaruh terhadap pola asuh ibu terhadap system komunikasi terhadap anak. Orang tua juga mampu menyaring informasi atau konten-konten yang tidak diperuntukkan untuk anak-anak. Kata kunci :  karakter, anak, berkomunikasi
