Abstract

Terrorism is an old phenomenon that has been strengthened today. Several acts of terror that have occured all over the world, especially in Indonesia, have created a sense of fear. Now, acts of terror which can be justified by religion have gained momentum. Such acts are almost always identified as being in some way related to Islam. The big question here is why the religion of Islam has been used in this way, that is as justification for terrorism. This paper elaborates on this issue, investigating some specific cases. First, it examines the difficulties of dining terror ism, and then discusses the nexus between religion and terrorism. Lastly, it concludes that Islam is indeed not a religion that condones terrorism.

Abstract

The Islamization that has swept the Islamic world in recent decades has successfully consolidated Islamic movements and reproduced the meaning of jihad, activating it as a controversial ideological instrument. This phenomenon inevitably often leads to misunderstandings, both among Muslims themselves and among non-Muslims in the West and the East. For some Western scholars, jihad, an Islamic teaching, is synonymous with religious war (holy war). Therefore, Islam is labeled as a brutal religion, applying militaristic patterns and declaring war not only permissible but also sacred. Islam—because of the doctrine of jihad—is also seen as promoting the use of violence to proselytize non-Muslims into Islam. Such misunderstandings have had fatal consequences and have unjustly portrayed Islam as a religion of violence and terrorism, as well as a threat to Western civilization. This portrayal has then perpetuated long-standing suspicions against the Muslim community.

Abstract

Islamic fundamentalism, often associated with radical Islamism, has become a central issue in public discourse, particularly in post-reform Indonesia. The emergence of hardline Islamic groups, such as Laskar Jihad, Majelis Mujahidin Indonesia (MMI), and Front Pembela Islam (FPI), has raised concerns about the possible radicalization of Islam in a country known for its moderate traditions. This study provides a preliminary descriptive and analytical exploration of these movements within contemporary Indonesia. It begins with a general discussion of Islamic fundamentalism and then focuses on its specific manifestations in Indonesia’s current socio-political landscape. The paper aims to shed light on the dynamics of these groups, their ideological foundations, and their impact on Indonesia’s religious and political identity.
