Abstract

This paper studies about the relationship between power and (the will to gain) knowledge. It reviews such key points as that every human being has modalities of knowledge whose function depends on his/her will and that human being has the will to power in addition to the will to know. Both wills are inseparable. Human beings cannot reach the power without knowledge; and knowledge cannot be reached without strong will and modality of power. However, as this paper proposes, the will to power and the will to know are purposive; they are not without goal. In Islamic perspective, reaching a power is not for the power itself; rather, it should be directed to reach the ultimate goal of manifesting the ‘God values.’ Islam guides people toward the ‘ilahiyah power’ or ‘the Spirit of God’ as the ultimate goal of achieving power. As a result, the idea of power/knowledge should be completed by faith/power/knowledge relation.

Abstract

This paper studies the relation between language and humanities in the history of science perspective. Based on this study there are four findings. First, relation between language and humanities in the structure of science in this modern era is not able to be divided from the background of the development of studia humanitatis in the west. Second, development of humanities in the west relates to the vision of education for presenting humanizing curriculum. This is because of the fact that the studies and research in language and classical literatures is a necessity. Third, in Islamic civilization, the term humanities is unpopular, but essentially the studies of humanities (ex: language, literature, logic, art) have strategic position. Islamic civilization is text civilization (hadlarah al-nash) based on Koran and to understand it needs the tool, mainly language science. The existence of those sciences in Islamic civilization is very significant.

Abstract

Study on philosophy of language, especially on contemporary Islamic thinker, is very needed for enriching thinking spectrum on this object. We hope this paper can open our horizon on this topics and enhance our knowledge especially on philosophy of language in Islamic perspective. This paper affords to describe Shahrur’s thought on relation between philosophy of language and modernity.  Important findings of the paper are: first, language as important reality in human life. With language realities of human life can be articulated well. So, language is a mirror of reality. Second, when we understand that “language as mirror of reality”, actually we make language passively. Shahrur’s philosophical thought on language gives us understanding that language can be functioned as active tool for developing progressive ethos and value for supporting modernity in Islamic world. Third, Philosophy of language gives us possibility for raising a new horizon of understanding on language as object of study. Keywords: Shahrur, Filsafat Bahasa, Modernitas

Abstract

Self-actualization is one of the main ideas in the Aristotle’s ethic philosophy. According to Aristotle, man’s happiness depend on how much he could actualize his potencies through positive acts. There are two ways to actualize these potencies; theoretic and praxis. Theoretic actualization is human self-actualization through spiritual way, it means man’s actualization as zoon logon echon (the creature who has spirit). Praxis actualization is human potential expansion that is realized through participation in the social life, it means man’s actualization as zoon politicon (the social creature). The happy human is the human who has actualized his self-potencies both in theoretic and praxis. In Islamic term, that concept can be compared with the acknowledgment: “the perfect human (al-insan al-kamil) is the human who has been successful in his relation with God (vertical relation or habl min Allah) and his relation with other human or other creature (horizontal relation or habl min an-nas) Keyword: theoretic, praxis, and ethic.
