Abstract

This article discusses about students’ difficulties in comprehending English novel at English Literature department of UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. The researcher analyse this article by using qualitative design. The data are collected by using documentation technique and interview technique. The interview is conducted with ten students that are selected  based on purposive sampling. Then, the data are analysed by using descriptive analysis technique. The result of this analysis shows that the students’ difficulties in comprehending English novel are lack of vocabulary and lack of grammar understanding.

Abstract

This study analyzes the construction of the Creature's character in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1831) through Gérard Genette's narratology and Jacques Derrida's deconstruction. The main problems addressed are: (1) how is the portrayal of the Creature constructed through Victor Frankenstein's narrative?; and (2) how can this portrayal be deconstructed to challenge identity boundaries within the text? Using a qualitative descriptive method with close reading techniques, this research examines textual evidence from the 1831 edition of Frankenstein. The findings demonstrate that the Creature's monstrosity is not an absolute truth but an unstable subjective perspective constructed through narrative authority. Through deconstructive reading, contradictions emerge between Victor's claims and the Creature's self-narrative, proving that identity in the novel is contestative and open to reinterpretation. The final conclusion reveals that the 'monster' label is not an inherent trait of the Creature but a discursive mask created by Victor to conceal his own irresponsibility as a creator. By amplifying the Creature's voice, this study proves that the boundaries between human and monster are thin and fragile, showing that the creator can be more 'monstrous' than the being he created.

Abstract

This study examines the portrayal of amnesia experienced by Leticia Ortiz in Fast & Furious (2009), Fast & Furious 6 (2013), and Furious 7 (2015) by applying a psychological approach. The research addresses two main questions: (1) what are the causes of Leticia Ortiz’s amnesia in The Fast Saga?; and (2) what kind of treatment is applied to cure Leticia Ortiz in the film of Fast Saga? Employing a qualitative descriptive method using documentation techniques, with dialogues and scenes from the selected films serving as the primary data. The analysis is based on Hilgard’s psychological framework and Jenny Mackay’s theory of amnesia to interpret the character’s memory disorder and recovery process. The findings reveal that Leticia’s amnesia is represented through two principal causes, namely sudden strike on memory and a shocking condition. Furthermore, the films depict two major approaches to managing her condition, consisting of living with amnesia and hoping for a cure. The research concludes that The Fast Saga presents amnesia not merely as a medical condition but also as a psychological experience that influences identity, emotional adaptation, and interpersonal relationships. Through Leticia Ortiz’s character, the films illustrate that memory loss functions as both a psychological phenomenon and a narrative strategy that shapes character development and emotional conflict.
