Abstract

The  composting   experiment  for  the  manufacture   of  compost   from  jeungjing  sawdust  has been done  in the Forest Products  Research  and  Development    Centre,  Bogor.  The  study   reveals that  a combination   of 60 percent   of jeungjing  saw- dust  and  40 percent   of  rice straw  composted   for  about  35  days produced   compost   with  45,87   of  C/N ratio  which  is in- ferior compare  to the minimum   C/N ratio of  the soil that should  be less than 20.In  the past,   attempts  have  been  made   by  many   workers   to  reduce   C/N  ratio  of  compost.   Inclusion   of  additives such as urea in the composting,   has been successfully   done.The  composting   trials in the  Forest  Product  Research  and  Development    Centre  was prepared   by the mixture   of 60 percent   of jeungjing  sawdust  and 40 percent   of  rice straw,   on  which  an amount   of  O;   3;  3,5;   5,  7 percent  urea by weight was added  to the mixture.   The composting   time  were consecutively   8; 16; 24,  and 32 days.This experiment reveals that  :1.The  analysis  of  variance of  the  C/N ratio  content   of  the  compost  produced   by different   urea content   and composting time,  are significantly   different.2.The composition   of  60  percent   jeungjing  sawdust  and  40 percent   rice straw  composted   for  about  35  days,  produced compost   with  a  relatively   law  C/N  ratio  (about   18,46).    This  is  particularly   true  when   7,5   percent   of  the  urea was engaged  in the  composting   process.   The  C/N ratio content   has met  the requirement   of  the compost  for fertilizer  which is about  20.

Abstract

The result of composting  experiment for the manufacture  of compost  as fertilizer  is reported in this paper. The compost was prepared from jeungjing  (Albizia  falcataria   L. Fosberg)  sawdust  and  rice straw  using  the  indoors  process.  Jeungjing  sawdust  mixed  with  rice straw  were composted  for  10 days, 20 days, 35 days and 55 days. The results are as follows:Except for C/N ratio, the compost produced from different  compositions  of jeungjing  sawdust and rice straw, contained  organic carbon,  total nitrogen  and volume  reduction  of compost  which were not significantly  different. Organic carbon, total nitrogen, C/N-ratio and volume reduction of compost were significantly  affected  by composting time. A combination of 60 percent jeungjing sawdust and 40 percent rice straw composted for about 35 days, produces  compost  with a relatively low C/N ratio (about 45.87) and volume  reduction  of  15.47%  The  C/N  ratio  content   was not  as good  as that  of  soils  which  is about  20 (Thompson, 1957).

Abstract

A research has been done to mix four plantation wood species, i.e., Acacia mangium (mangium ), Paraserianthes falcataria (sengon), Eucalyptus urophylla (ampupu) and E. deglupta (leda) for wood pulp. Pulping process is semichemical open caustic soda. Pulp that have been processed then formed. into-MDF with wet process. physical and mechanical lests are done for density, moisture content, water absorption, thickness and volume swelling, tensile strength, modulus of elasticity :Range of pulp yield produced in the experiment was 67-82%. The mixed wood composition of 25% mangiuin, 28% sengon, 24% ampupu and 23% leda, processed wilh 35 g/l NaOH produced pulp yield in accordance with FAO standard, like wise, mixed wood camposilion of 32 % mangiun, 37% sengon and 31 % ampupu cooked with 35 and 40 g/l NaOH Physical and mechanical properties for five mixed wood compositions done in the experiment meet FAO standard if processed with 35 g/l NaOH, except for tensile strerigth. The resulis showed that wood chips composition, cooking liquor coecentration of them caused a significant effecl on tensile strength, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity, but these factors did not influence the density, water absorption and thickness swelling.
