Abstract

The anatomy of 9 wood species belonging to genera of Dryobalanops was studied, described and then compared. Dryobalanops rappa Becc differ from others in the absence of silica body in rays cell.Although the morphology of D. oocarpa V.SI. and D. abnormes V.SI. respectively can be grouped to D. beccarii Dyer and D. oblongifolia Dyer, but the anatomy of those wood species differ from each other. Whereas D. oocarpa V.SI. has rays 2 - 5 seriate-in width and 79.84 + 0.23 micron in diameter, D. beccarii Dyer has rays 1 - 3 seriate in width and 51.94 ± 0.12 micron in diameter. D. abnormes V.Sl. has rays 1 - 3 seriate in width and 53.68 + 0.20 micron in diameter, D. oblongifolia Dyer has rays 2. - 5 seriate in width and 76.89 + 0.23 micron in diameter.A tentative identification key of 9 wood species of Dryobalanops is presented.

Abstract

The  anatomical   features  of  aren stem  in relation  to  its utilization   were  studied   by  taking  samples  from  Bogor  Re- gency,   West Java.   The  mature  stem  has 8 to 10 m of clear bole with  30 to 43 cm  in diameter.  The hard pheripheral  region of  the stem  is only  0.5 to 5.2  cm in thickness   or 4 to 20 percent  of the .stem  volume. The pheripheral  region of  the stem  consists  largerly of fibrouascular  bundles  while  the central portion   consists  mainly bf parenchyma   tissues.  The frequency   of  vascular bundles  at pheripheral  region may  reach 139 bundle/sq.  cm  then gradually decreased  to 10 bundles/sq.   cm at the center. The  fiber  dimension   vary along and  across the  stem:   length  1618  to 2712  microns,  diameter.28   to 52 microns,  wallthickness  5 to 24 microns.   The Runhell  ratio varies from  0. 56 to 13.33.

Abstract

The  anatomical   features   of  coconut   stem   at  several  depth   and  heights   were  each  observed.   The  nature  stem  has 22 to 30.5  cm in diameter  and the hard pheripheral  region of the stem  is 4-8 cm in thickness. The cross section  of  coconut stem  consists  of  four  region. The outer  region of the stem  with  the  thichness of about 0.5 cm is epidermis and the inner region is the pheripheral   region which can be divided into eksopheripheral and endoperipheral regions.   Eksopheripheral region is  0.5-1 cm consists mainly   of  fiber   tissues;  the  endopehripheral    region consists  mainly of  vibrovascular  bundles, about 4-8 cm in thickness. The innest  region is central portion, which  consists mainly  of parenchyma   tissues. There  is a relation  between   frequency and  diameter of  vibrovascular  bundles  in stem,  where the higher the frequency of vibrovascular bundles (229 bundles/sq.cm), the smalller  the diameter  of  vascular bundles  (103 bundles micron). The fiber dimension varies either along or across  the stem as follows: length 1191.6     to  1980.8   microns,  diameter 28.3 to 42.6 microns, wall thickness 5.2 to 13.8  microns. The runkell  ration  varies  from  0.5 to 1.9.
