Abstract

Social media are widely used in today’s activities for all levels of humans. In students’ daily activities, updating their status through social media is like a must. Thus, the writer wants to highlight her teaching activity to something that her students love doing in it. English and social media become her concern to write this paper. Therefore, the aim of this research is to find out the kind and examples of vocabulary learned and appropriate grammar that appear in the students’ social media during this online learning era. She will also tell the steps, challenges and solutions based on her English teaching experience. The method is qualitative research, by finding, describing and analyzing the data in students’ social media after online learning English. The data shows that many students apply correct grammar, but only a few students use vocabularies learned from online class to update their status in social media. Besides, the lecturer provides some suggestions to fix their errors in using the words in a sentence. This research is supported by other relevant studies about the advantage of social media in learning and it  tries to contribute ideas toward different opinions from other researchers. The findings also more detailed on the use of correct English grammar and vocabulary in social media.

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to find out the use of language in TV series in the perspective of gender and age. It is also found the differences and similarities among adult male, female and older people use the non-standard language. This research used a method of descriptive qualitative research, since it analyzes all the script on the TV series. The sample of the study is consisted of 2 parts which are divided into gender and age perspectives based on the underlying theories. The conversations were categorized as: two languages (Bahasa Indonesia or the original language of the TV series and English as the translation). The dialogs are also divided into standard language and non-standard language among adult males, females and older man (parents). Then, the findings of the research shows that Labov’s theory is rejected by Olive and Tara’s dialect in the dialog, but they support the statement of Aldous Huxley. Then, the utterances of Olive’s Father, it violates Downes’s theory who says that between the ages of 25 and 60 people choose standard as opposed to dialectical forms most frequently. Besides, by learning this journal, it is hoped that this article can be an example to the young generation early so that they do not participate in the decay of standard language specifically when they use in academic context.Keywords: Gender, Age, TV series, English Learning

Abstract

Translating a novel becomes popular nowadays. Meanwhile, there are four technical tools in the translation procedures which are ordinaryly used by the translator; addition, subtraction, elimination and adaptation. Thus, the purpose of this research is to find the four technical tools in Listiana Srisanti’s translation result appeared in the first novel of Harry Potter. Library research is considered as the method of collecting data. The data in the novel that have been collected are analyzed by using the four technical tools. Based on the classification, it is discovered that there are ten data of addition, thirteen data of subtraction, twelve data of adaptation and nine data of elimination. Those data found are representative enough from the whole data in the novel, because the author takes the data by its part from the translated sentences contained the technical tools. In conclusion, the result indicates that the technical tool of subtraction is the most considerable data (13) applied in the novel.
