Abstract

Swietenia macrophylla King is one of popular tree species for timber product in Java. In order to increase the productivity of planting stock production at nursery, this research was conducted. The objectives of this research was to study the influences of sowing method and NPK fertilizer application on the growth of mahogany seedlings at nursery. The treatments were sowing methods (with and without pricking out), types of NPK fertilizer (grain and solution) and the dosages of NPK fertilizer (0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 gram/seedlings). The result showed that sowing methods and type of NPK fertilizer did not give significant effect on the growth of mahogany seedlings. The dosages of NPK fertilizer caused significant different on the variation of height, diameter, total dry weight and seedling quality index. The application of NPK fertilizer at 0.6 g/seedlings/month showed the best result i.e: the seedling heigth (42 cm), stem diameter (5.15 mm), total dry weight (5.28 g) and seedling quality index (0.38).

Abstract

This study was conducted to observe growth variation and genetic parameters of progeny test of teak (Tectona grandis Linn. F) in Gunung Kidul at 5 years of age. The progeny test of teak was laid-out in a randomized complete block design consisting of 120 families, 6 blocks, 3 tree-plots. Measurement was conducted annually for traits tree height, dbh, stem straightness, branching type and individual tree volume. The results of study showed that the mean of survival rate reached 84.72%, which was varied from 55.56 to 100%. Among tested families and populations, all measurement traits showed significant differences. The average of growth traits werw 5.86 m for tree height, 5.69 cm for dbh and 0.015 m3 for individual stem volume. In case of form traits, the average were 2.12 for stem straightness and 1.90 for branching type. Estimated family heritability were 0.166 for tree height, for dbh, 0.245 for stem straightness, 0.140 for the branching type and  0.289 for individual  stem volume.

Abstract

Callophyllum inophyllum Linn. is one of potential tree species for commercial plantation as biofuel sources. This species was generally propagated by generative method and seldom vegetative method in mass planting stock production. A completely randomized design was arranged in factorial experiment to identify the effect of three grafting methods and four origins of scion in mother tree on the growth of grafted plants. The growth of grafted plants was observed at nursery and the  development of graft union anatomy was observed through microscopic method in laboratory. The result showed that grafting method significantly influenced to shoot number and shoot length, with the best result showed by veneer graft method. Position of scion in mother trees influenced shooting rate and the best result was gained through the scion from the lower part of the tree crown. The survival rate was 72-100%, shooting rate was 68-100% with 1,9 shoots per grafted and average of shoot length was 0,65 cm.The growth of graft union showed earlier by callus formation and then differentiated to a vascular tissue

Abstract

The aim of this experiment was to identify of survival percentage, height plant and stem diameter of Alstonia angustiloba progeny trial at 2 year old to support the provision of improved seed. This experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design. The research used 2 factors, i.e. population sources (Carita-Banten, Pendopo-Muara Enim, Lubuk Linggau-Musi Rawas and Solok-West Sumatera) and parent trees (43 parent trees). In this experiment, parent trees factor was nested in the population sources. The result shodwed that survival percentage, height plant and stem diameter of Alstonia angustiloba progeny trial at 2 years old in Wonogiri were 82.07 %, 2.43 m and 2.85 cm, respectively.

Abstract

Breadfruit plant or Artocarpus altilis (Parkinson) Fosberg is one of versatile plant that is widely cultivated by  Indonesian people that spread from Aceh to Papua. It  produces fruit that has a high nutrient content so it is potential to be developed as  an alternative sources of staple food. In order to identify the diversity of breadfruit plants in Indonesia, the clonal plantation test of 14 origin populations, namely Sleman, Gunung Kidul, Banten, Sukabumi, Cilacap, Kediri, Banyuwangi, Madura, Bali, Mataram, Lampung, Bone, Sorong and Manokawari has been planted in Gunung Kidul  in 2003 – 2004. The fruits were  collected  from natural populations and they were analyzed on chemical content, while  the analysis of the chemical content in the bark and loaves, used samples from clonal test of breadfruit in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta. Morphological observations of breadfruit plant indicated some variations on stem growth, branching, leaf shape and also the shape and size of the fruits. The chemical analysis results showed some variations among the populations as follows the average number of calories (62.65-110.98), carbohydrates (7.81-24.32%), protein (1.38-3.67%.), fat (0.31-0.47%), vitamin C (19.56-47.74 mg/100g), phosphorus (10.14-35-68 mg/100g), calcium (42.23-251.45 ppm), fiber (1.18-1.84%), and iron (0.51 ppm). The chemical analysis result of breadfruit flour showed that the average of carbohydrate content (70.44%), protein (6.59%), fat (1.29%) and fiber (6.55%). The total phenolic content were on the stembark (4.79%), bark of branches (4.25%), leaf (4.89%) and fruit (2.01%). Beside that it was found that in the bark of stem and  branches, leaves and fruits positively contained saponin compound.
