Abstract

Matoa (Pometia Pinnata J.R. Forster & J.G. Forster) is one of potential multipurpose tree species for forest and land rehabilitation program in North Sulawesi. Limited information on the technique of cultivation of matoa often become an obstacle for development, especially seed storage techniques because of all the seed are not always directly sown after collection. This study aims to determine the effect of time and storage media on the viability of matoa seeds. The design used in this study was complete randomly design arranged in factorial, consisting of (two) main factors : 1) storage time and 2) storage media. The storage time consists of three  levels : 5 days, 10 days and 15 days. Storage media consists of four levels : aluminium foil, calico cloth, cocopeat and without storage media. The results showed that the aluminium foil is the best storage media that can be used to store the matoa seeds up to 15 days.

Abstract

Shorea assamica Dyer is one of endangered species in the North Sulawesi. The species has high economic value, however information about technique of silviculture and its conservation are very limited. The research aims to determine the effect of shade and the use of NPK (15:15:15) fertilizer on growth rate of S.assamica in the nursery. The design was applied in this reserach according to randomized complete design with split plot design. The main plot was shade level and the sub plot was NPK fertilizer level. The treatments were covering four levels of NPK fertilizer (0; 0.25; 0.50 and 0.75 g/seedling) and three levels of shade (light, medium, and heavy). The results showed that the best combination of treatments for height and diameter growth, seedling dry weight, and seedling quality index of S. assamica on 6 months age was NPK fertilizer dosage of 0.5 g/seedling in moderate shade.

Abstract

Cempaka wasian (Magnolia tsiampaca (Miq.) Dandy) is one of the most popular carpentry woods in North Sulawesi.  The development of cempaka wasian species is constrained by the inability of seeds to be stored for a long period of time. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of different storage periods and conditions towards seed germination of cempaka wasian. The experimental design used completely randomized factorial design with two main factors as follow: storage condition and storage periods. The results showed that the conditions and storage periods had an effect on seed water content, germination rate, and seed vigor index of cempaka wasian seeds, but it did not affect the germination capacity. The storage conditions of air condition room (temperature 18ºC―21ºC, relative humidity 51percent―61 percent) was the most ideal condition for storing cempaka wasian seeds. Cempaka wasian seeds are included in the category of intermediate seed because the treatment of the storing period for 4 (four) weeks did not affect the germination capacity even though the water content of the seeds has decreased.

Abstract

This research purposes to identify the pathogen causing leaf spot in cempaka seedling and its control technique. Identify cause of disease is necessary to know precise technique control. Identification of disease was conducted in macroscopic appearances and microscopically to determine pathogens. Identification is done by using the determination key of fungi. The results showed that the early signs of leaf spot disease on cempaka seedlings in the nursery are streaks or spots on the leaf surface with distinct boundaries. Leaf spots are formed generally brown surrounded by darker boundaries. The result shows leaf spot disease on cempaka seedling was caused by fungal pathogen Colletotrichum sp. Techniques for controlling the disease can be done by isolating the infected seeds, reducing the intensity of canopy, and using the appropriate fungicides.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the suitability of using cocopeat as planting media at transplanting containers in the polytube of the cempaka seedlings growth.  The method used in this research was implementing a trial use of cocopeat as transplanting media in the polytube and being compared to the growth of cempaka seedlings in polytubes and polybags containing topsoil.  The parameters observed included percent survival (%), height (cm), and diameter (cm) of the plants.  Through the t-test it was shown that the parameters of diameter, height, and percent survival of the cempaka seedlings using cocopeat as a transplanting media were significantly different than those using top soil as a transplanting media.

Abstract

Langusei (Ficus minahassae (Teysm.et.Vr.) Miq) is one of the endemic flora of Sulawesi which existence is increasingly threatened. Attempts to maintain the existence of Ficus minahassae species by understanding the cultivation techniques of the langusei species, especially regarding the appropriate germination techniques, need to be addressed. This study aims to determine the level of fruit maturity and the appropriate extraction treatment for the germination of langusei seeds. The experimental design used in this study was a complete randomization design which is arranged in a factorial pattern. The first factor is the classification of the level of seed maturity based on fruit color categories: 1) Orange-brown fruit, 2) Orange-reddish fruit, 3) Red fruit, and 4) Red-black fruit, while the second factor is the fruit extraction treatment which consists of: 1) Extraction with dry wind treatment for 24 hours, 2) Extraction with drying treatment for 12 hours, and 3) Extraction with water treatment for 24 hours. The results showed that the fruit maturity level and the appropriate extraction treatment to produce optimal langusei seed germination were in the orange-brown and orange-reddish fruit (mature fruits prior to ripening) which was soaked in water for 24 hours.

Abstract

The use of growth retardants widely used as a solution in the storage material for the propagation of plant species that have recalcitrant seed types. White meranti (S.assamica) is one kind of commercial timber from dipterocarp family found in Sulawesi. This species is one of the types of plants that have the type of recalcitrant seeds. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using growth retardants in the nursery. The experimental design used in this research is completely randomized design. The results showed the use of growth retardants provide excellent effectiveness in inhibiting the growth of seedling of S.assamica. Paklobutrazol of 250 ppm is a the best treatment that can provide growth inhibition. Percentage of growth inhibition of seedling age of 6 months amounted to 75,14 % (height) and 33,33% (diameter).
