Abstract

This research aims to describe the causes of ASEAN’s failure in making the Code of Conduct for South China Sea dispute during the period of 2002-2012 by using the concept of international organization’s weaknesses and influence of external actor. The above-mentioned dispute involves four ASEAN member states; there are Vietnam, The Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and China, which is not an ASEAN member state. This research perceives that the failure of ASEAN in making Code of Conduct is influenced by internal and external factors. By using qualitative method, the author found that there are three internal factors that challenge ASEAN, namely different national interest among member states, decision-making process based on consensus, and weak dispute settlement mechanism. The external factors are economic relations between ASEAN and China, China’s persuasion efforts to ASEAN, and China’s ability to prevail strategy towards Cambodia. Abstract

Cultural and economic diplomacy are crucial and being prioritized in Indonesia's foreign policy. Coffee is one of the commodities used to promote Indonesian culture abroad while at the same time has a potential value to support the nation's economy. This article aims to describe the ways Indonesian President, Joko Widodo, conducts cultural and economic diplomacy through coffee and the involvement of state and non-state actors in Indonesia’s coffee diplomacy. This paper uses a qualitative research method. The data used are collected from the Indonesian government official websites and national media coverages during the period of Joko Widodo’s administration from 2014 to 2019. There are three main concepts used in this article, derived from the International Relations theory of diplomacy, namely: the concepts of issue areas; actors; and methods. This paper examines cultural and economic diplomacy as the issue areas, state and non-state actors as the actors, and bilateral and multilateral approaches as the methods of conducting diplomacy. The main findings of this paper are: (i) cultural and economic diplomacy through coffee diplomacy are connected to one another and conducted simultaneously; (ii) both bilateral and multilateral approaches are still relevant in conducting coffee diplomacy; (iii) both state and non-state actors are actively involved in conducting coffee diplomacy                                                                                                         Keywords: Coffee, Cultural Diplomacy, Economic Diplomacy, Jokowi, Indonesia

Abstract

By analyzing to what extent does patriarchy hinders women's political participation, this paper discusses the relation of patriarchy and active citizenship for women in ASEAN member states. For the purpose of analysis, this paper uses the theory of patriarchy and the theory of active citizenship related to politics, gender, and citizenship aspects by using qualitative method and literature analysis. This paper finds that patriarchal culture has a significant impact in hindering women's political participation because it has been institutionalized through: (i) political party practices; (ii) tradition, religion, and customary laws; and (iii) gender segregation in the society. Since the political participation is limited, therefore, the “exclusion” of women in the society within ASEAN member states remains. They belong to the marginalized group and are unable to access equal power and resources to act their active citizenship.

The contents of ASEAN official accounts cover the internal and external cooperation as part of its network diplomacy. Moreover, youth organization, think tank, and educational institution are part of the non-state actors discussed in this paper. These non-state actors also actively participated in disseminating information regarding ASEAN internal and external issues. Therefore, both state and non-state actors related to ASEAN have utilized digital platforms to communicate with the public and support the maintenance of ASEAN network diplomacy.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines how Indonesian universities and the country’s evolving practice of science diplomacy jointly contribute to advancing the national Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and relying on secondary data, this study analyzes the institutional roles, strategic initiatives, and policy frameworks that shape Indonesia’s SDGs implementation. The first part of the findings highlights the multidimensional role of universities through their core mandates of education, research, and community services. Universities are identified as key drivers of mainstreaming sustainability values into curricula, producing evidence-based research that informs policy, and implementing community outreach programs that directly address local development challenges. The second part explores Indonesia’s science diplomacy as an emerging tool for linking domestic scientific priorities to global platforms. Science diplomacy enables Indonesia to showcase local knowledge, attract international collaboration, and position its scientific innovations in global discussions on climate action, health security, and sustainable development. Together, universities and science diplomacy create complementary pathways to strengthen Indonesia’s SDGs ecosystem. The study concludes that integrating academic expertise with diplomatic engagement is essential for enhancing Indonesia’s global visibility and ensuring that local sustainability efforts contribute meaningfully to global SDGs targets.

Abstract

This study examines digital public diplomacy narratives of Indonesian Embassy abroad through a case study of the Instagram account @IndonesiainDC, managed by the Embassy of Indonesia in Washington, D.C, the United States of America (U.S.). Using a descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis, the research analyzes posts published between 19 September 2025 and 31 December 2025, a period marked by the appointment of Ambassador Dwisuryo Indroyono Soesilo after a two?year vacancy. The study applies Cull's (2009) taxonomy of public diplomacy (listening, advocacy, cultural diplomacy, exchange diplomacy, and international broadcasting) to assess how the Embassy projects Indonesia’s identity, communicates policy priorities, and engages with foreign publics. Findings reveal that @IndonesiainDC actively employs all five functions of Cull’s taxonomy. Listening is reflected in diaspora engagement and informal community events; advocacy appears in posts promoting Indonesia’s positions on critical minerals, palm oil sustainability, and gender equality; cultural diplomacy is evident in language programs, performing arts, gastrodiplomacy, and museum collaborations; exchange diplomacy emerges through symbolic gestures such as university visits and structured initiatives like Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) and free Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) courses; and international broadcasting is demonstrated in Ambassadorial announcements, Embassy closures, and diplomatic milestones. Beyond Cull’s framework, this account also engages in hybrid practices such as webinars for Indonesian producers, knowledge diplomacy through academic collaboration, and ceremonial protocol functions, highlighting the evolving nature of digital diplomacy. This case contributes to the broader understanding of soft power and digital diplomacy in the field of International Relations, showing how Embassy adapts traditional functions to contemporary digital narratives.

Abstract

Organizational communication is a crucial aspect to ensure the flow of workplace interactions and to minimize potential internal conflicts. This study aims to analyze the communication patterns applied in managing internal work dynamics at Bali in Bali Souvenir. This study applied a qualitative descriptive approach. Data gathered through observation, interviews, and documentation with seven purposively selected informants, consisting of a supervisor, an admin, senior employees, junior employees, and a supplier of Bali in Bali Souvenir. The findings indicate that the dominant communication patterns are downward and horizontal communication, which function in conveying instructions, coordinating task implementation, and addressing operational issues. Although these patterns are considered effective in ensuring message clarity and fostering a conducive work atmosphere, several obstacles remain, including delays in information delivery, message alterations, and limited direct communication from subordinates to superiors. These findings highlight the importance of integrating formal and informal communication to enhance organizational adaptability in dealing with complex work dynamics. Therefore, strengthening two-way communication and external communication more systematically are essential to improve organizational effectiveness in the future.
