Abstract

Abstract. Chinese language education is becoming popular in the world, including in Indonesia. Since the end of the New Order government in 1999 and the establishment of the strategic partnership between Indonesia and China in 2005, more and more Indonesians are starting to learn Chinese. Apart from being a foreign language, Chinese is also considered as a heritage language for Chinese Indonesian. With the increasing interest in learning Chinese, trilingual schools that offer Chinese, English, and Indonesian language learning have started to appear in various cities in Indonesia, including in Surabaya. Within the context of trilingual schools, this study uses a qualitative method to explore family language policy (FLP), related to multilingualism and the efforts to preserve the heritage language, in the Surabaya Chinese family. Data were obtained by interviewing eight participants who are parents of trilingual school students from various levels of education: kindergarten, elementary and secondary school. Three core components of FLP, namely: language ideology, language management, and language practice were used as guidance to code the interview data. We found that the language ideology of the parents is linked with the global and economic value of the language and the imagined multilingual person they hope their children to be. The parents consider English and Chinese as the important languages in relation to today’s globalized world. They imagine their children to be multilingual persons who have the necessary linguistic capital for communicating transnationally. But, due to the lack of Chinese and English language skills of the parents, the language practice at home is rather limited to the Indonesian language. They still rely heavily on trilingual schools to provide a language environment and linguistic capital of English and Chinese language. Although parents’ language ideology is supportive of their children being multilingual, it turns out that trilingual schools have a fairly important and central role in forming multilingualism in children. Keywords: family language policy, trilingual schools, Chinese Indonesians

Abstract

This research observed and analyzed both films entitled; “Ngenest” and “Cek Toko Sebelah” to find the manifested hybrid Chineese related to inter-ethnic relationships by drawing on the concept of hybridity. “Ngenest” and “Cek Toko Sebelah” were two successful films that were both written and directed by Ernest Prakasa, a Chinese Indonesian, and also featured Ernest Prakasa in a leading role. Close readings of both films were conducted to identify relevant and recurring themes related to the research questions. The theoretical frameworks of hybridity and essentialism/stereotyping were used to help in gaining a deeper understanding of the essence of the films. The results indicate that race still plays an important role in othering and building ethnic boundaries. Many stereotypes and counter stereotypes against both the Chinese and pribumi exist in the films. In terms of lessening ethnic boundaries, both films present hybridity in action in the form of inter-ethnic marriage and the everyday relationships of the Chinese and other ethnic groups. Although the essentialized Chinese identities are present, they are constantly in negotiation with other identities, in forming a hybridized version of Chineseness.

Abstract

AbstractDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese Testing International implemented HSK HomeEdition. In May 2020, the HSK test center in Surabaya, Indonesia also began to hold homeedition tests. At present, there are very few studies on HSK Home Edition, and considering thereliability of HSK Home Edition, it is necessary to study the scores of HSK Home Edition, especially the comparison with paper-based test scores. Because the scores of thepaper-based test and the on-site computer-based test are also different, and currently thesethree forms of HSK are all used, this study compares the scores of HSK Home Edition withpaper-based and on-site computer-based HSK at the Surabaya test center. Statistics show thatthe scores of HSK (Level 1) to (Level 3) paper-based tests and on-site computer-based testsare basically higher than that of Home Edition. On the contrary, the scores of the HSK (Level4) to (Level 6) Home Edition are basically higher than those of the paper-based test and theon-site computer-based test. HSK Home Edition reliability is affected by several factors, namely testing location, participant groups, proctoring effectiveness, and testing environmentKeywords: HSK; HSK Home Edition; HSK score; Surabaya test center
