Abstract

Evaluation on the resistance of kenaf accessions (Hibis¬ cus cannabinus /..) to Fusarium oxysporum SchlectResistant variety is one of the most important components controlling of fusarium wilt disease on kenaf caused by Fusarium oxysporum Schlect. To ind out resistant variety an evaluation on kenaf accessions was conducted in the laboratory and screen house of Phytopathology, RITFC, Malang in June-December 1997. The results of the selection on 77 accessions showed that 41 accessions were highly resistant, 1 2 accessions were resistant, 7 accessions were moderate, 12 accessions were susceptible, and 5 accessions were highly susceptible Three resistant and highly resistant accessions were namely 85-9-73, DS/005 H, and FJ/004 He could inhibit F. oxysporum growth about 23.40- 32.43 mm and its discolorisation about 0.0-13.4%.

Abstract

Promising kenaf lines adaptive to flooded area in Lanongan districtThe objective of the trial was lo ind out the most adaptive kenaf lines for flooded area in Lanongan district with a productivity of at least 20% higher than the best control varieties. The trial was conducted at Mojoasem viliage, Larcn sub-district, Lanongan. The trial was designed as a randomized block in 3 replications. Twenty kenaf genotypes consisting of 17 kenaf new lines and 3 control varieties were tested in this experiment. Plot size and plant spacing used was 2 m x 10 m and 20 cm x 15 cm, respectively. The seeds were sown in September 1999. Parameters observed were plant height, stem diameter, frish weight and dry ibre weight. The results showed that lines He 85-9-73 , He 85-9-75. and He 583 were the most promising lines for flooded areas Lanongan with the productivity of 3.4, 3.1, and 3.0 tons dry ibre per ha.

Abstract

This expeiment was aimed to study response of fives kenfa accession to shoot regeneration and to establish an appropriate regeneration protocol for kenaf. Theexpeimentwasperformed at Tissue Culture Laboratory Research Institute for Tobacco and Fibre Crops (RITFC), Malang. from June to Octo¬ ber 1997 Cotyledons with plumules attached were used as explanls and culture medium for callus induction was MS-based medium with BAP (2 mg/1) and NAA (0 5 mg/1). Calli produced in this cultures were transferred into MS-based medium containing BAP (2 mg/1) and GA.i (5 mg/1) for shoot initiation. All shoots obtained were then sub-cultured in MS-based medium without regulators (MSO) for root formation. Rooted shoots (plantlets) were acclimatized in the sterile sand and transferred mto sterile soil in the glass house. Results of this experiment showed that the most responsive accessions were Cuba 108/1. followed by KK 60, He 48. PI 324922. and CHN/ 056 H with the average number of shoots per explant 4.32 * 4.21,4.00 + 4.01.3.05 + 2.98,2.80 + 1.47. aid 2.72 + 2.49. respectively, at 40 days ater transfering on shoot regeneration medium Shoots rooted ater 14 days on MSO medium with frequencies of 81 50-93.30%. Healthy plantlets survived and grew well in soil media in the glass house. Therefore, an appropriate shoot regeneration protocol for kenaf was found.
