Abstract

Disillusions with the limits of parliamentary politics and the increasingly dilapidated processes of party politics have generated a renewed interest on civil society as a means of rejuvenating public life. In light of mounting animosity against the "high politics" of political parties, parliament, and constitution, civil society is perceived as the diagnosis as well as cure for current ills in politics. This led to glorification of civil society as an alternative to conventional practice of politics. However, experience from new democracies suggests that civil society has been increasingly tampered with cranks, extremists, rejectionists, and crooks. This paper attempts to present two faces of civil society: civil and uncivil; and tries to relate them to democratization. Drawing on Indonesian experience, it argues that civil society can be both supportive and destructive to democracy.

Abstract

This paper attempts to discuss the resurgence of the state as an important actor in dealing with energy crisis. The shortfall of oil supply and the steady increase of oil consumption in the past fews years—which resulted in sharp increase of oil prices—have rendered the state responsible for formulating and implementing energy policies to ensure national security. The discussion will be divided into three main sections. The first section will analyze the resurgence of states as prime actor in international relations. After being sidelined for sometime (due to the transformation of international issues from traditional strategic-military concern into economic and humanitarian concern), the state regained currency in the wake of terrorist and energy threats. The second section will discuss the current energy security problem and how it affects nation-states. The final section will analyze U.S. response to current energy crisis. Attention will be put on how U.S. government produce and implement energy policies to ensure its national security.

Abstract

With the death of Pierre Bourdieu in 2002, the world has lost its mostpassionate and authoritative sociologist. Although politically Bourdieu was always on the Left, the early 1990s marked a sharp turn of his writings. Sickened by the tendency of Mitterrand's government in leaning to the Right, Bourdieu had become increasingly bolder and audacious in criticizing globalization and neoliberalism. What made him more frustrated was the fact that neoliberalism at least in France some other European countries was installed by those who claim to be socialist enthusiasts. In his last years, Bourdieu unleashed a volley of blistering attacks on conformism of both the media and intellectuals toward neoliberalism. His only hope was to contrive a global social movement This paper tries to show how  important Bourdieu's critical perspective on neoliberalism in our attempt to understand the impact of globalization. It argues that Bourdieu's attack on neoliberalism and demand for a global social movement can help us to get a better understanding of globalization and antiglobalizationmovements.
