Abstract

Proper bonding between adjacent pavement layers is very important to ensure good pavement performance. Manual torque bond test is known to be one of the tests to determine mechanical properties of bond between adjacent pavement layers. However, the test has several drawbacks that may affect the accuracy of results. This paper is focused on the development a mechanically controlled automatic torque bond test in order to eradicate the drawbacks associated with the manual torque bond test. A trial test and calibration of the newlydeveloped apparatus was performed to ensure the accuracy of results. The nominal loading rate of the manual torque bond test performed at 600Nm/min was found to be lower than the target loading rate, leading to a lower measured shear strength compared to that of the automatic torque test. It was also found that the appearance of lateral shear would not significantly affect the shear strength. Keywords: bond test, torque, shear, loading rate.

Abstract

Rubberized bitumen technology has been applied for a long time to enhance the performance of the asphalt pavement. In this research, the influence of natural rubber (NR) latex and crumb rubber (CR) on the conventional and rheological characteristics of 80/100 penetration grade bitumen before and after aging was compared. Conventional tests of penetration, ring and ball temperature, and ductility were conducted to evaluate the consistency of base bitumen and rubberized bitumen. A dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) test was carried out to evaluate the viscoelastic characteristics of the base and rubberized bitumen. The results showed that the addition of NR latex and CR reduced the penetration grade and increased the ring and ball temperature and ductility of the rubberized bitumen. This indicates that promising enhancement of the bitumen properties can be expected with the addition of NR latex and CR. The rheological properties analysis results showed that addition of CR up to 8% and NR latex up to 4% improved the complex modulus and rutting resistance of the rubberized bitumen compared to conventional bitumen. This indicates that the application of NR latex and CR in bitumen modification is expected to improve the durability of asphalt pavement.

Abstract

Palm oil clinker (POC) is a non-biodegradable palm mill by-product typically discarded in dumpsites. This study analyzed the performance of POC powder (POCF) as bitumen modifier in terms of conventional and engineering properties of bitumen and asphalt mixture. For the study, base bitumen of 60/70 penetration grade was utilized and different POCF dosages (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8% by weight of bitumen) were added. The base bitumen was effectively modified with POCF and then characterized. The conventional and engineering properties of the modified bitumen and asphalt mixtures were assessed. From the characterization results, the formation of Si-O crystalline structure and a new Si-OH functional group was identified. Furthermore, a meandering pattern was observed due to the modification of the base bitumen with POCF. Based on the conventional test results it was revealed that the addition of POCF to the base bitumen resulted in a stiffer blend compared to unmodified bitumen. The addition of POCF improved the modified mixtures’ Marshall stability relative to the unmodified mixtures. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and regression modeling showed the influence and significance of POCF-MB, with R2 values of (95-99%). Finally, the 4-6% POCF dosage was found to be the optimum dosage, yielding the best performance in terms of the engineering properties evaluated.
