Abstract

Masquerade is the use of mask and disguise by a person to hide a certain identity and make a new identity. The concept of masquerade that is the use of mask has been used in Japanese theatre such as Kabuki and Takarazuka; however those theatres also use the concept of gender bender. Nowadays, the two concepts are applied in Japanese comic that is popular in teenager. In this study, I would like to analyze the use of mask and gender bender by Makoto and Midori in Japanese comic W-Juliet and Midori is a Tomboy. I would like to reveal the strategy that is used by Makoto and Midori in wearing their mask and the meaning of the masks that they use. By this study, I will prove that femininity and masculinity are not related by sex and can be used as mask to create a new identity.

Abstract

The character traits in Shinchan seem to be contrary to the structure of masculine and feminine traits. I am interested in discussing the feminine character traits that are adopted by the male characters and the masculine character traits that are adopted by the female characters in a patriarchal society in Japan. Under the patriarchal system, there are rigid segregation of gender roles and the expected feminine and masculine traits. The main purpose of this paper is that even though some of the male characters adopt the feminine character traits and the female characters adopt the masculine character traits, the gender roles Japanese patriarchal system remains unchanged

In this paper, I will reveal the way Percy Jackson finds his identity by taking a journey and makes him become a hero in the world of the gods. I will combine the theory of Joseph Campbell, the hero’s journey, and the theory of Erik Erikson, the identity crisis, to analyze Percy Jackson’s journey to search for his identity. Besides Percy finds his identity in the journey, he also finds himself as a hero

Abstract

Ika Natassa’s Divortiare trilogy is Metropop genre novels which tell about Alex’s life as a single woman and housewife. Thus, I want to focus on Alex’s way of prioritizing her career as single woman or divorcee and Alex strategies for being a good wife in Ika Natassa’s Divortiare trilogy. I am going to analyze Alex’s life with women’s roles theory related to patriarchal ideology in Indonesia. The first part of analysis discusses Alex’s way to prioritize her career and her reason. The second part explains her strategies for being a good wife in her second marriage. Also, I find that Alex does her work so hard in order to prove that she can survive on her own. I also find that she embraces the traditional feminine roles in order to get a happy marriage. Therefore, she enjoys her life as a married woman rather than a successful single woman.
