Abstract

AbstractToday, English for students of Elementary School is not included in the curriculum. It has been only taught as an additional subject or Mulok. This policy should be revised since Indonesia has been going towards 4.0 Industry Revolution Era. In this era, there is a blended global digital interaction between online and industry. Here, English is really needed for getting and sharing information around the world. Therefore, preparing young students with English is very crucial. Besides, they should have Higher Order Thinking Skills or HOTS to face this era. Having English skill and HOTS, the Indonesian students and people are ready to compete with all competitors around the world.

Abstract

ABSTRACTCommunicative Competence (CC) is the target of language teaching today. It contains six competences: Linguistic Competence, Discourse Competence, Socio-Cultural Competence, Formulaic Competence, Interactional Competence, and Strategic Competence. Teaching English  for students of PTKI should also convey those competences. The competences should be applied in the syllabus, the materials, etc. However, most of the English syllabus has not conveyed the highlight of those competences. This paper, therefore, aims to propose a syllabus design and the sample of materials based on Communicative Competence. The syllabus contains the highlight of those competences for each topic. The design, then, can be developed by the lecturers to meet the students’ needs.

Abstract

Discourse competence is the main competence in Communicative Competence. In language teaching, the role of discourse is to achieve good communication. This study aims at describing the discourse competences in English e-book for students of Junior High School grade 9. The data was collected by using “documentation”. The spoken materials presented in section one for each unit was taken as the data. In analyzing the data, the method used here are Padan (identity) method with “referential” instrument and Agih (distributional) method. They were analyzed how the materials convey the components of discourse competence based on the model of communicative competence proposed by Celce-Murcia, et.al. From the analysis, it was found that the materials convey the components of discourse competence although there are no clear highlights showing each component.

Abstract

This research aims at describing the English text types applied in English Textbooks for students of Islamic Education Department. The teaching must be relevant with the students’ needs and the purpose of language teaching. One of the purposes is for understanding the different text types. Moreover, the college students should be in epistemic level. In this level, they are expected to be able to use English in transforming knowledge. The findings reported that there are ten text types applied in the textbooks. The dominant text is Information Report while the least is News Item. Almost the materials contain information related to Islamic knowledge. It also integrates the knowledge of how to use language for different purposes and functions, how to produce and understand different text types, and what the common linguistic features of each text type.
