Abstract

Teaching Grammar through fun learning can minimize the boredom of students. By adopting singing patterns, students can memorize the formula quickly. This study is a qualitative research. The result reveals that by incorporating the fun learnings of using comparison, singing and grammar puzzle, students become more critical and have a better understanding regarding formulas and patterns of Tenses. In addition, These methods are merely beneficial for students especially in learning vocabulary, pronunciation, speaking, listening, and grammar. This study presents implications of teaching English particularly Grammar using various methods including Comparison, Singing and Puzzle.

Abstract

Karakter kemandirian perlu ditanamkan kepada anak sejak dini terlebih pada anak disabilitas grahita yang memiliki keterbatasan. Hal ini dimaksudkan agar mereka dapat bersikap mandiri dalam melangsungkan kehidupan di masa mendatang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: 1) Mengetahui pelaksanaan pembelajaran tematik kelas IV di SDLB Kaliwungu Kudus.2) Mengetahui pembentukan karakter kemandirian pada anak disabilitas grahita melalui pembelajaran tematik.3) Mengetahui faktor pendukung dan penghambat dalam pembentukan karakter kemandirian anak disabilitas grahita Penelitian ini merupakan jenis penelitian lapangan (field research) dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan metode observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa: 1) Pelaksanaan pembelajaran tematik kelas IV di SDLB Kaliwungu Kudus berjalan dengan baik. 2) Upaya yang dilakukan oleh guru dalam membentuk karakter kemandirian anak disabilitas grahita kelas IV di SDLB Kaliwungu Kudus melalui pembelajaran tematik yaitu dengan menerapkan strategi dan metode yang bervariatif, menggunakan media yang inovatif, bahan ajar yang sesuai tingkat perkembangan anak. Dari upaya tersebut, empat aspek kemandirian yakni aspek intelektual, ekonomi, sosial, dan emosi peserta didik disabilitas grahita telah terbentuk. Pembentukan aspek kemandirian anak disabilitas grahita ini sudah sesuai dengan nilai-nilai keislaman. Hal ini terlihat ketika terjalinnya komunikasi yang baik antara guru dan peserta didik serta penerapan kebiasaan baik dari sekolah dan orangtua 3) Faktor pendukung meliputi semangat dan percaya diri peserta didik yang tinggi, peran guru, lingkungan sekitar. Adapun faktor penghambatnya meliputi IQ peserta didik disabilitas grahita terbatas, kelas dan jumlah guru yang tidak ideal.

Abstract

The habit of watching movies using English subtitles among students has an impact on students' English skills. This study aims to report the students’ views towards the opportunities of watching English-subtitled movies and the challenges they experienced. Using a qualitative method, the data of this study were garnered through semi-structured interviews with five college students at an Indonesian university. The findings reveal that a number of opportunities were gained by the college students through watching English-subtitled movies including having entertainment in students’ free time, promoting exciting English learning media, and enriching English vocabulary. Meanwhile, the students found challenges in watching English-subtitled movies including unfamiliar vocabulary, new English idioms, and various slang languages. Thus, this study promotes the need for efforts among students to overcome these challenges by gaining insight through a lot of sources like books, the internet, articles, and so on.

Abstract

In the globalization era, English has been an international language spoken by people throughout the world. To deal with this, English teaching has been conducted in educational sectors. Besides, parents play a main role in enhancing students’ English skills. The present study aims to elaborate on the role of parents in developing students’ English skills. This study is anchored in a qualitative case study method. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five Indonesian mothers aged 34 to 39 years. An interview guide was used as an instrument of the study to assist the authors during the process of the interview including support and roles provided by the parents in enhancing their English learning and some challenges they found. The findings reveal that Indonesian parents particularly mothers have roles in helping the success of their children’s English learning including facilitating children in accessing English learning resources, introducing English through daily interaction, facilitating children with English courses, and accompanying children in learning English at home. However, they also experienced some barriers to doing their roles such as the lack of knowledge in English, lack of English exposure in the community, and the need for being up to date with technological advancement. This study presents an implication that the need for parents to provide simultaneous efforts for enhancing a better linguistic environment at home and the need for collaborations from all aspects including school and society.

Abstract

English has been considered an important means of international communication not only for education but also for career advancement. In general, students find it difficult to understand expressions or sentences in English. The same thing occurs when learning listening comprehension for EFL students in Indonesia. Listening is one of the most difficult skills experienced by students in learning English. The research in this paper aims to investigate the barriers to English listening comprehension of university students in Indonesia and their implications for listening curriculum development. Data were garnered through semi-structured interviews with eight Indonesian higher-education students. The results depict that the barriers experienced by students in listening comprehension include a lack of pronunciation understanding and different accents, a lack of English vocabulary, a lack of voice clarity quality, and difficulty in understanding the speed of pronunciation. To improve listening comprehension, students need to practice listening to audio from native speakers repeatedly, English podcasts, speeches, and inspiring videos via YouTube, English songs, and watching movies. The implications for listening curriculum development were discussed in this paper.

Abstract

English has become a global language due to its widespread usage around the world, which has also influenced the business world. The term "English as Business Lingua Franca" refers to the use of English as a communication tool for business purposes. The objective of this study is to describe how Indonesian online businessmen perceive English and examine the impact of using it as a Business Lingua Franca on their businesses. Data were collected through a mixed-method approach, including online questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings suggest that Indonesian online businessmen mainly use English as a marketing tool, and despite the difficulties they face while using it, they rely on it for various business endeavors. The study recommends that employers provide their employees with English courses to improve their communication skills with customers and enhance their business skills. In conclusion, the use of English in business communication is essential and beneficial in Indonesia as it has become a global language.

Abstract

In the era of globalization, communication or relations between countries, commonly referred to as international communication, is progressing in all countries. The role of English in the relations of a country is essential, especially in the business world, for example, the Import Export business, whose activities include importing and exporting goods from one country to another. This study aims to describe the roles of English in the world of import-export business in Indonesia, especially the furniture industry in Jepara Regency. This study employed a qualitative method. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews with an owner from the furniture Industry in Jepara, Indonesia, and several literature sources, research institutes, and government agencies. The findings reveal that English has an important role as an international communication tool and as a main to reach marketing. In addition, it is useful for building communication with people from various countries. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the role of English is very crucial for a successful business, especially in terms of export-import with other countries.

Abstract

The pandemic impacted people's lives worldwide, affecting the functioning of several sectors, especially in the education sector. The impact of the pandemic has resulted in teachers and students having to work faster and maximize learning from face-to-face to online learning. The impact is that some students or teachers experience difficulties and stress in online learning. This stress is a person's thoughts that were originally (positive) to be irrational/negative. The purpose of this study is to describe experiences dealing with academic stress among pre-service English teachers in Indonesian higher education during online learning. The authors used the photovoice method by explaining some photos in this article. We also interviewed four pre-service English teachers to get more data. The findings revealed that some ways used by pre-service English teachers in coping with academic stress during online learning are playing online games, having extensive reading such as comics, relaxation or healing, and listening to music. The study promotes an implication that the need to have some refreshments for students to cope with academic stress during online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe present study explores the process of instilling religious moderation values in English teaching at an Indonesian vocational school. Furthermore, challenges in instilling religious moderation values and solutions are discussed. The qualitative case study method was used in this study. Data were gathered through observation, semi-structured interviews with two English language teachers and two students at an Indonesian vocational school, and documentation. The findings reveal that internalization of religious moderation values can be incorporated through verbal stimulation (reminders and advice), English material, teaching methods, teachers' behavior, and assignments. These values include tolerance, discussion, justice, dynamics, creativity, and innovation. Meanwhile, challenges include students' personality differences and a lack of English textbooks containing religious moderation values. Several strategies were used to tackle the obstacles, including motivating students to participate actively in the teaching and learning process and exploring English material dealing with religious moderation. The implication of the study was discussed. ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi proses penanaman nilai-nilai moderasi beragama dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris di sekolah menengah kejuruan (SMK) di Indonesia. Selanjutnya, tantangan yang dihadapi guru bahasa Inggris dalam menanamkan nilai-nilai moderasi beragama, dan solusinya juga dibahas. Metode studi kasus kualitatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi, wawancara semi terstruktur dengan dua guru bahasa Inggris dan dua siswa SMK di Indonesia, dan dokumentasi. Hasil temuan menunjukkan bahwa internalisasi nilai moderasi beragama dapat diwujudkan melalui stimulasi verbal (pengingat dan nasihat), materi bahasa Inggris, metode pengajaran, perilaku guru, dan penugasan. Nilai-nilai tersebut antara lain toleransi, diskusi, keadilan, dinamika, kreativitas, dan inovasi. Guru bahasa Inggris menghadapi tantangan karena perbedaan kepribadian siswa dan terbatasnya sumber atau materi bahasa Inggris yang mengandung nilai-nilai moderasi agama. Adapun beberapa strategi yang digunakan guru untuk mengatasi kendala tersebut antara lain memotivasi siswa untuk berpartisipasi aktif dalam proses belajar mengajar dan mengeksplorasi materi bahasa Inggris yang berhubungan dengan moderasi agama. Abstract

Abstract: Does Artificial Intelligence (AI) Play Roles in Enhancing Academic Writing? Unravelling Lecturers’ Voices in Indonesian Higher Education. Objectives: The rapid advancement of technology has brought about effectiveness and flexibility in the field of education in the digital era. However, in the context of academic writing, the study of AI tools utilization from the perspectives of lecturers across diverse majors has not been explored yet. The present study explores the voices of lecturers on the roles of artificial intelligence (AI) in fostering academic writing. Methods: Anchoring in a qualitative design with a case study approach, data were gathered from semi-structured interviews with six lecturers at an Indonesian higher education. Findings: The findings revealed that some lecturers had positive responses toward the development of artificial intelligence particularly in fostering academic writing. In addition, artificial intelligence (AI) enhances academic writing by promoting efficiency and accuracy, developing consistency, detecting plagiarism in academic writing, and providing information and data to enhance academic writing. However, some challenges in using artificial intelligence for academic writing include the lack of transparency, critical thinking skills, and ethical considerations in using artificial intelligence tools. Conclusion: The study provides implications that the need for academicians especially lecturers to get up to date with technological advancements such as AI tools utilization in academic writing and use them wisely, the need to increase academic writing quality by enriching academic literacy and joining workshops and mentoring programs. Keywords: academic writing; artificial intelligence; digital era; Indonesian higher education; lecturers’ voices.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i1.202436
