Abstract

Rappaccini’s Daughter is a story which was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in   1844. Its principal setting is a fantastic garden filled with lush vegetation and poisonous flowers, in the center of which is a broken fountain. This story is replete with symbols and symbolic allusions. However, like other literary works, the story has an “empty space”. This paper is intended to invite the readers to one of the possible interpretations of the theme of this particular work of Hawthorne to fill that “empty space”. Man is superior to any other creatures. He has the capacity to learn and to develop himself. But, if “… he cares infinitely more for science than for mankind” and “if the head and heart are separated and the scientific functions alone, what price must the scientist pay?” The answer is the destruction to the life of mankind. Abstract

Sherwood Anderson (1876-1941) is one of the early twentieth-centuryAmerican authors. He is among the first American authors to explore the innernature of human being. His “hunger to see beneath the surface of lives” is bestbeing expressed in Winesburg, Ohio. This study examines the problem of neuroticanxiety of women who live in Winesburg, Ohio. The women presented seem to showa less positive nature in women. A few women are portrayed as being stupid andshameless.Men treat woman as object, only to be used. Some are defeated, subordinated and loveless marriages. They escape from their problem byemploying ‘ego defence mechanisms’. Relating to the women’s subordination andthe neurotic anxiety of women in Winesburg, Ohio, then patriarchy theory andpsychoanalysis are applied to analyze the object. Hopefully the embrace ofunderstanding, love and sympathy will overcome the constraint.KEY WORDS: women’subordination, patriarchy and defence mechanisms

Abstract

Novel A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court is a serious novel written by Mark Twain which was equal in power to Huckleberry Finn, his masterpiece novel. This research attempts to show sets of values between the old world and the new world. One of the values is “Technology versus Superstition”. The novel focused on Hank Morgan, a Superintendent at the Harford Colt Arms Factory, who tried to in vain to impose his 1880s American mind on the feudal society of Arthurian England in the sixth century. In undertaking study, the theoretical approach is Reception Theory. Reception Theory says the reader takes an active part in the literary process and gives meaning to the work of art itself. However, to prevent the analysis from becoming subjective, The Expressive Theory of Art is applied. The choice is that A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court is a bitter satirical piece of writing by Twain who, in his declining years, turned more and more pessimistic about American Society. This study is in the hope of allowing the readers to know the grains of truth in this novel and thus broaden our literary vistas. Key words: technology, superstition, the old world (1880s), the new world (17th Century)
