Abstract

The Tulang Bawang river with its back swamps, in Lampung province, Sumatra, is identified as a habitat of major importance to waterbirds. There are at least two breeding colonies, one of which may prove to be the largest heronry so far discovered in Indonesia, with between 5,000 and 33,000 pairs of herons and egrets. The most abundant species is Javan Pond-heron Ardeola speciosa, and this is only the second breeding colony of this species to be discovered in Sumatra; it may rank as the largest in Indonesia. It is the third colony to be discovered in Sumatra of Great Egret Casmerodius albus. The first breeding records in Sumatra of Night-heron Nycticorax nycticorax were obtained from one colony, and of Oriental Darter Anhinga melanogaster at the second. The region is also probably the most important in Sumatra, if not in the Sundaic region, for Bronze-winged Jacana Metopidius indicus. Recommendations have been made for Nature Reserve status to be designated at the sites of the two colonies, and for a Game Reserve to cover a much wider area of the feeding grounds and fisheries. It is feared that there has been a major decline in population of both the White-winged Duck Cairina scutulata and the Cotton Pygmy Goose Nettapus coromandelianus, and it is proposed that the latter species should also now be classified as threatened in Indonesia.

Abstract

All new records of Sumatran birds collected by various observers over the period from 1987 to 1995 that add significantly to the status or distribution as given in the Sumatran checklist (van Marle & Voous 1988) are described. This is the second regional (island) report published by Kukila, the first covering Sulawesi in 1990

Abstract

Pulau Tinjil and Pulau Deli are islands of 600 ha and 950 ha respectively lying 14 km off the south coast of West Java. The authors made six visits to one or other of the islands between 1988 and 1995. Both are covered with primary forest, but a large population of Long-tailed Macaque monkeys has recently been introduced on both islands as a free-range monkey-breeding facility. The islands have an depauperate avifauna with probably just 20 resident landbird species, common to both islands. These include one near-threatened species, the Nicobar Pigeon, which was formerly very common but which may have suffered as a result of the introduction of monkeys. Other small island/coastal specialists include the Beach Thick-knee, Pied Imperial Pigeon and Chestnut-capped Thrush. Except along the beaches, there are few forest-edge habitats, and most of the landbirds, including those normally occupying open habitats on the mainland such as White-breasted Waterhen, Yellow-vented Bulbul and Brown-throated Sunbird, have expanded their range to occupy the forest niche

Abstract

This is the second update of the Kukila Checklist of the birds of Indonesia. The authorship of these checklist updates will be the Ornithological Society of Indonesia, or Kukila for ease of reference. The inaugural checklist was published in 1992 (Andrew 1992) and the first update appeared a year later (Andrew 1993). This second supplement is organized in the same way except that the many issues of classification that have been published since 1993 will be desk with in a separate paper that is currently in preparation. The main objective of the present paper is to present new distributional data. Most of the data are derived from published references, although a few are from submitted notes that await publication.
