Abstract

Background: Gastric rupture following blunt injury abdomen is a rare presentation with a reported incidence of 0.02-1.7% in current literature. History of recent meal has been implicated in traumatic gastric rupture. Commonly traumatic gastric rupture is associated with other injuries like splenic injury and fractures. Prompt diagnosis and early intervention reduces mortality and morbidity. Primary two layered closure can be done for a better surgical outcome. We report 2 cases of blunt injury abdomen with gastric rupture, one with road traffic accident and other being from a fall from a height, which were managed successfully without any post operative morbidity and mortality.

Abstract

Background: Patients with Sickle cell trait (SCT) are usually asymptomatic. They are usually unaware of their condition unless they have a family history. There are specific situations, where these people suffer from the effects of sickle cell trait. Splenic syndrome at high altitude is one of the specific problems. It is usually seen after a patient with SCT has been inducted to high altitude like in case of mountaineers and military personnel deployed in high altitude warfare. Pain abdomen due to splenic infarction in individuals with SCT is one of the manifestations. These patients, if diagnosed in time, they can be spared from unnecessary surgical interventions. We present herewith our experience of splenic infarction due to SCT in high altitude and their management.

Abstract

Background: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is a rare genetic disorder presenting in young age with mucocutaneous pigmentation and hamartomatous polyposis. Method: We report a case of PeutzJeghers syndrome in a 16 year old boy presenting with acute intestinal obstruction. Results: Imaging studies revealed intussusception. He had mucocutaneous pigmentation and multiple hamartomatous polyps which were diagnosed histologically. The unusual presentation of the case and its successful management has prompted us to report the case with literature review.

Abstract

Background: Hydatid disease in humans is endemic in sheep rearing regions. However, a worldwide distribution is encountered. This is a parasitic disease caused by Echinococcus granulossus, which is a cestode. Liver is the most affected organ. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment in hydatid cyst of liver. Since the popularization of laparoscopic surgery, hydatid cyst of liver is being treated laparoscopically in few of the centers. Spillage and anaphylactic reactions are the main pitfalls of laparoscopic management of the hydatid cyst of the liver. We present a case of hydatid cyst of liver, which was managed laparoscopically using Palanivelu Hydatid System (PHS) without any spillage or anaphylactic reaction.
