Abstract

Various materials and devices are needed to support production activities in the oil and gas industry. Therefore, optimal inventory strategy is required to satisfy the demand of the materials and devices with minimum inventory costs. This study deals with the evaluation of the inventory strategy of a private oil and gas company. As the object of the study, we considered acetylene inventory which is currently not managed properly. The strategy for acetylene inventory that has hitherto been implemented by the company is lot for lot ordering system in each period. In this study we applied Periodic Order Quantity, Wagner Whitin, and Silver Meal methods as alternative strategies for acetylene inventory control. The result of the study indicates that the Silver Meal method obtains optimal inventory schedule. It results in the lowest inventory costs compared to the other proposed methods and the current company’s strategy.

Abstract

Chemicals are key supporting items for production processes in the oil and gas industry. One of the strategies to control the supply of the chemicals is identifying them based on their critical level. This study deals with the identification of critical chemicals in a private oil and gas company. Currently there are 47 chemicals that are declared by the company as critical items. The company determined critical itemsmainly based on theirdemand. In this study we identified the critical level of the chemicals using ABC analysis. We used the last five-year data and considered the total inventory costs of each item. The study shows different result from the one that is currently done by the company. The analysis indicates that there are 14 chemicals that are classified as critical items. The result of the study can be used as the basis for the company to control the inventory of the critical chemicals. In addition to inventory costs, future study can be done to develop method for classifying critical itemsby taking into accountmultiple criteria such as expired date, ordering lot size, and delivery time of the materials.

Abstract

This paper is concerned with lot size dependent lead times in a (Q,R) inventory system considering-quantity discounts offered by suppliers. With regards to the existing model that considers the impact of lot size on lead time and safety stock equirements, we present an efficient iterative algorithm to decide lot size that minimizes total inventory cost. The algorithm simultaneously determines lot size and safety stock based on the tradeoff between inventory holding cost and shortage cost. A nurnerical example is provided to clarify the iteration procedure. In addition, we identify the effict of shop floor queing factor on lot size decision. The result of the study shows that purchasing larger lot size does not always result in minimum total inventory cost. Larger lot size reduces per unit ordering cost and shortage cost, but increases the holding cost due to more inventories. Moreover, we conclude that increased shop floor queuing factor leads to increased production lead time, resulting in larger lot size. Keywords: (Q,R) inventory system, lot size dependent lead times, quantity discount.

Abstract

The increasing global demand for paperand the opportunity for Indonesia to become one of the the top three players in the world pulp and paper industry tend to increase the capacity of national pulp production in the coming years. On the other hand the production process of pulp gives rise to the environment impacts such as increasing use of energy and environmental pollution. This study aims to do the environmental assessment of pulp production using Life Cycle Assessment by means of Simapro Software Version 8.0.3.14.As the object of the study we took a pulp production process using acacia wood as raw material that is undertaken by a pulp producer named PT Tanjungenim Lestari. The company is located in Muara Enim, South Sumatera, Indonesia. The results of the study show that the highest environmental impacts generated from the pulp production process include marine aquatic depletion and human toxicity resulted from chip preparation, digesting, and washing/screening processes.
