Abstract

Code switching and code mixing are the phenomena commonly seen done by a bilingual. This behavior is influenced by several aspects such as the linguistic system, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and language competence of the bilingual. If children are able to distinguish two different languages since early age, they will be considered simultaneous bilinguals. They show that they develop multiple, rather than single, linguistic systems. However, it was understood that code switching and code mixing were due to the failure in using proper words, language features, and sociolinguistic competence. Yet, recent studies have shown that bilingual children are able to use both languages proficiently with no signs of confusion or failure in language use. This ability also does not hinder their cognitive development.

Abstract

The maintenance of community languages of migrant students is heavily determined by language use and language attitudes. The superiority of a dominant language over a community language contributes to attitudes of migrant students toward their native languages. When they perceive their native languages as unimportant language, they will reduce the frequency of using that language even though at home domain. Solutions provided for a problem of maintaining community languages should be related to language use and attitudes of community languages, which are developed mostly in two important domains, school and family. Hence, the valorization of community language should be promoted not only in family but also school domains. Several programs such as community language school and community language program can be used for migrant students to practice and use their native languages. Since educational resources such as class session, teachers and government support are limited; family plays significant roles to stimulate positive attitudes toward community language and also to develop the use of native languages.

Abstract

Cognitive load theory is a very useful concept that can be used by instructional designers, teachers, and educators to create effective instruction. It has been applied and developed in many areas including teaching English as a second or foreign language. In designing the instruction for teaching Tenses, worked example, split-attention effect, goal-free effect, modality effect, and redundancy effect are effective techniques that are used to reduce extraneous load, increase germane load, construct and automate schema. Designing and developing new instructions using cognitive load theory is also very useful. Teachers should understand this concept thoroughly because each instructional technique is connected to one another. In addition, it is very important to consider learners’ level of expertise, elements of interactivity and forms or sources of information before designing the instruction. Those elements of information and instructional techniques that are covered in the concept of cognitive load theory, should be well understood and applied by teachers particularly language teachers. Teaching foreign or second language is a big challenge for non-native English teachers; hence, effective instructional design can assist and enhance teaching learning process. This theory will contribute to positive outcomes where students understand the concept of Tenses thoroughly and teachers develop their teaching skill.

This study is based on the experience of the author who is also the pioneer of the BIPA program at the University of Nottingham which is supported by literature studies. Opportunities of BIPA program in overseas are the internationalization of Indonesian in the world, strengthening diplomatic relations between the two countries, promoting and widening cooperation between various universities in Indonesia and abroad both in academics and scholarships affairs, enlarging the community of Indonesian language and culture overseas, business for universities in Indonesia and other language institutions, and increasing the number of tourists in Indonesia. The challenges are related to curriculum development, quality of teaching, teaching methods and management of BIPA program at the University of Nottingham in United Kingdom. This BIPA program ran succesfully despite the challenges because the opportunities have been realized. Keywords: BIPA, Opportunities, Challenges, Pilot Program

Abstract

This paper is aimed at analysing methods, challenges and strategies of online assessment for foreign language learners during the Covid-19 Pandemic at a higher educational setting. The online questionnaires were distributed to lecturers of English Department of Nusa Cendana University. It was revealed that the lecturers assessed students’ language skills by project, quiz, exam, written assignment, online discussion and presentation. The main challenge was ineffective nature of online assessment because it cannot measure students’ language skills comprehensively and was prone to academic dishonesty. Various technical issues such as time management, Internet connection and miscommunication were faced by the English lecturers as well. However, they also applied several strategies to overcome those challenges including changing scoring system, lowering the standard, giving students extra time to complete the assignment, using online testing tools to score and store the assignment, instructing the assignment via video conference such as Zoom to avoid miscommunication. It is expected that lecturers are able to use various kinds of methods to assess their students’ foreign language abilities and to be able to overcome every challenge they encounter by applying meaningful strategies.

Abstract

Investigating students’ perspectives on assessment has been widely studied, however, relatively little is known about how university students respond to assessment. Assessment is an important part of teaching and learning process because it is used to measure students’ knowledge, skills and also to evaluate the program. Students’ perspectives are particularly important because the power of assessment directly impacts on their motivation and attitudes towards learning. This study focused on finding out the student perceptions of the test, test result, test procedure and feedback of four skill-subjects that they had taken. The study explored the students’ opinions of English language assessment in English Department of Universitas Nusa Cendana, Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia through the draw and write technique and interview. The results showed that assessment might cause positive or negative feelings among the students. This paper helps understand how assessment impacts the students’ lives, how teacher can make a well-designed assessment to measure the students’ ability and skills properly without discouraging them from learning, and how the draw and write technique can be used to document the student perceptions.

Abstract

While almost half of the teachers’ activities are assessing their students, they are not well-prepared with assessment literacy training. Hence, they are unable to produce good tests to measure students’ level of knowledge and skills. This study is aimed at analyzing item difficulty and item discrimination of a test made by an English teacher at a junior high school in Kupang. It was descriptive qualitative research and the instruments of the research were test items, answer keys, and students’ answer sheets. For the difficulty index, it was revealed that more than half of the test items were easy, while only 2% of the test items were difficult. In terms of the discrimination index, it was found that only 10% of the test items were excellent and most of the test items (46%) were poor. These findings indicated that the English test had a poor item difficulty index and low item discrimination index. Hence, it did not fulfill the criteria of a good test and could not measure students’ true ability. It is highly recommended for the teachers to improve the test items and for the government to provide assessment training for the teachers so that they can produce good tests.
