Abstract

The cooperative principle proposed by Grice stated “make your contribution such as is required, at the stage at which it occurs, by the accepted purpose or direction of the talk exchange in which you are engaged”, but in the real life communication, this principle was often being flouted which was known as flouting maxim. This research aimed to describe the flouting maxim phenomenon in one of Indonesian Social Media,Tik Tok Application. From the analysis of the collected data, the writers found that some conversation of netizens in the comment page in Popo Barbie Tik Tok account contained flouting maxim, whether it is flouting maxim of quantity, quality, relevance, and also manner. When the flouting maxim happened, it contained certain implicature, in which the speaker intended to deliver certain implicit message, such as assuring the hearer, and giving mocking”

Abstract

Wardhaugh in Chaer and Agustina distinguishes two types of language change: internal and external change. Internal changes occur from within the language itself, such as phonological, morphological, or syntactic changes. External changes occur due to outside influences, such as borrowing or absorption of vocabulary, the addition of phonemes from other languages and so on. The purpose of this research is (1) to analyse the language change that can be found in mass media and social media. (2) to analyse the social context that can be found in mass media and social media. The method used in this research is the qualitative method. The data was taken from Padang Express newspaper and Facebook. From the analysis there are so many languages change that can be found in mass and social media. Many people change the language when they used it in mass and social media.

Abstract

The problem in this thesis is the analysis of ideal feminist and discriminated feminist from the characteristics of Amanda and Laura is based on the three waves of feminist movements. Both Amanda and Laura represents the different kinds of feminist in literaty work, Amanda is the strong woman as the representation of ideal feminist, whereas Laura is the weak woman as the representation of discriminated feminist. Then, the purpose of research is to describe Laura as the discriminated feminist, Amanda as the ideal feminist, and to explain Laura and Amanda as the ideal and discriminated feminist from The Glass Menagerie.In research methodology, the data collection is performed through library research, which the writer gains the data and information about his object trought the books and other audiovisual equipment that related and relavant to the topic in the form of words or pictures. In the data analysis, it uses genetic structuralism, it looks the external factor of the literature that conveys the internal element of literary work such the actions of the main character, such as characters and author. The findings in this thesis can be seen from the characters of Amanda and Laura represents the different kinds of feminist in literaty work, Amanda is the strong woman as the representation of ideal feminist, whereas Laura is the weak woman as the representation of discriminated feminist. Amanda, a typical southern belle, trapped by the cruel reality, seeks comfort from her glorious past and causes her isolation from her life, which is the embodiment of her alienation. Laura, a fragile and terribly shy girl with a crippled leg, withdraws completely to her own world made of glass animals and eventually isolates from the society. It is her disability and the family environment cause her isolation from the society, which is just the embodiment of her alienation.

Abstract

This research is a study about Scarlet’s marriage from the novel Gone with the Wind and the history American Civil War. Scarlet’s love has changed from romantic love to materialistic love before and after the war. The purpose of this study is (1) to analyzed the effect of American Civil War on Scarlet’s first marriage to Charles Hamilton (2) to analyzed the effect of American Civil War on Scarlet’s second marriage to Frank Kennedy (3) and to explain the effect of American Civil War on Scarlet’s third marriage to Rhett Butler. The approach used is a psychological approach that the discusses the overall analysis in literature, both in extrinsic and intrinsic. The theory used in this research are the theory psychological and historical of literature according to Alan Daiches and Russel which states reflection of the characters’ psychological behavior in life and remembering the moment/historic moment a long with the literary work written. This study employs the qualitative method. The object of the study is focuses on the central figure of a Southern woman named, Scarlett O’Hara play written by Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell. The data sources are divided into two, namely primary data source and secondary data source. The primary data source is the play script itself and the secondary data sources are script text and some references related to the research. The technique of the data collection is note-taking. The technique of the data analysis are telling and showing method. The first, previous to the war, when everything is peaceful and prosperous, Scarlet marries because of her feeling to Charles Hamilton. Ashley’s marriage to Melanie Hamilton and rejection of Scarlet drive nearly all of Scarlet’s important subsequent decisions. Scarlett marries Charles Hamilton to hurt Ashley. After the war when everything is destroyed and poor condition, Scarlet marries because of her need on money to pay the tax and develop her business.

Abstract

This thesis is entitled The Struggle of Matchmaker to Find Love as Seen in Jane Austen’s Emma. The formulation of the problem in this research is how the extrinsic elements that builds the story outside the novel. How the psychology of personality of a matchmaker in finding love. The background of this research problem is in the writing of a novel created by an author, there is an author personality in creating characters in the story. Knowing the extrinsic elements that build a story will make it easier to conduct research on the psychology of the character in the story. The purposes of this research are describe the extrinsic elements that builds a novel from outside and to analyze the psychology of Emma’ personality as a matchmaker in finding love. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data are in the form of sentences and statements in the Emma and Biography of Jane Austen. The technique used in analyzing data is content analysis. The steps taken in analyzing are reading and understanding the psychology and story in the novel. This step will make it easier to research using theory extrinsic element theory of Renne Wellek and Austin Warren (1948) and personality psychology from Freud’s (1962). The results of this research there are extrinsic elements of the author which consists of literary relation with the biography, psychology, society, and idea of an author. The extrinsic elements influenced the author in creating a work on personality psychology Emma as a matchmaker in finding love consists of Id, Ego ad Superego. This research it was found that the personality of Id from Emma is more dominant and the Ego tends to follow the wishes of the Id. Superego about the principle of values and morals are also widely found. Emma really holds the values and morals of how she acts in society.

Abstract

The Kerinci dialect has various variations in almost every region. These dialects also have differences, both at the phonological and lexical levels between dialects. However, speakers and interlocutors understand each other when speaking in their respective dialects so that it does not prevent the Kerinci people from communicating with each other. The purpose of the research was to describe the differences in language variation between the Kerinci Siulak dialect and the Kerinci Rawang dialect. This research uses Jeff Siegel's theory of language and dialect variations. In reviewing the data of this study using qualitative methods, while data collection used interview methods with recording techniques. This research was conducted in Hamparan Rawang Village and in Siulak Village, Kerinci Regency with 5 informants. The results showed that based on the available data, in the Kerinci language, the Siulak dialect and the Rawang dialect, there are sounds which are phonemes that can be grouped into three groups, namely vowels, diphthongs, and consonants. The Siulak and Rawang dialects have 23 sounds, with 5 vowels, 10 consonants, and 8 diphthongs. The correspondence phonemes of the two dialects are 35 which are at the initial, middle and final syllable caused by geographical, sociocultural and social status factors.

Abstract

Pasambahan tradition is one type of Minangkabau oral literature. This tradition is carried out in the wedding ceremony in Minangkabau custom. Pasambahan is a conversation between the two parties concerned between the host (sipangka) and the guest (si alek) to convey the intent and purpose with respect. This study aims to determine the form of symbols, symbolic functions, and symbolic meanings contained in pasambahan (customary conversation) which is a study of semiotic science theory by Marcel Danesi (2004) and interpret pasambahan at every Minangkabau traditional wedding ceremony. In addition, this study also aims to determine the forms of Minangkabau wedding traditional clothes and the symbolic meaning contained in these clothes. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research method. The main data collection techniques in qualitative research are observation, in-depth interviews, and followed by a study of documentation. The data analysis techniques in this study were writing down data obtained from the field, describing pasambahan (customary conversations), verifying, collecting focused data, analyzing the data obtained, and formulating final conclusions as research findings. Based on the results of the study found 7 (seven) Minangkabau traditional wedding ceremonies in the Minangkabau community of Kanagarian Sungai Puar, Pelembayan District, Agam Regency. In addition, there are also some symbols found in pasambahan (traditional conversations) in the Minangkabau traditional wedding ceremony. This study also found several symbols attached to the Minangkabau traditional wedding attire which consisted of the clothes of anak daro (bride) and marapulai (groom). contained in the traditional Minangkabau wedding dress is a form of responsibility and life that is lived during marriage.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the existence of Totto-chan's external conflict which is realized by the author in the work of Totto Chan the Little Girl at the Window by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. The purpose of this study is to identify the external conflict experienced by Totto-chan, as well as the causes of the conflict in the novel Totto Chan the Little Girl at the Window by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. In this research the researcher used Structural Analysis theory by Tzvetan Todorov. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data in this novel are quotes from words, sentences related to the external conflict experienced by the character Totto-Chan. Data collection techniques in this study were reading, marking data and recording data related to external conflicts in the novel Totto Chan the Little Girl at the Window by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. The results of this study indicate that in the novel Totto Chan the Little Girl at the Window by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, the external conflict experienced by Totto-chan is caused by Totto-chan's hyperactive nature which often causes a lot of problems because Totto can't stop moving, causing a lot of stress people are annoyed by it and also Totto's imagination is too high which makes it difficult for Totto to understand the circumstances around her and she always does the things she likes without thinking about the consequences of her actions.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the existence of external and internal conflicts that are manifested by the author in the novel My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. The purpose of this research is to identify the external conflict experienced by Kate, analyze the inner conflict experienced by the characters Anna and Kate and the causes of external conflict and inner conflict in the novel My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. This method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data in this novel are excerpts of words, sentences related to the external conflict in Anna's character and the inner conflict of Anna and Kate's characters. The data collection techniques in this research were reading, marking data, recording and distinguishing the data collected based on external conflicts and inner conflicts in the novel My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. The results of this research indicate that in the novel My Sister Keeper by Jodi Picoult, Anna's external conflict is caused by her own family, especially her mother, the inner conflict between Anna and Kate's characters, namely, Id, Ego, and Superego. Anna and the causes of internal conflicts that are felt by Anna and Kate are individual differences, differences in cultural backgrounds and differences in interests between individuals.
