Abstract

This research is aimed at describing the maxims of politeness used by female sellers in a traditional market in Sumatera Barat. The research was conducted in one tradititonal market in Sumatera Barat, namely Batu Sangkar. The data are any utterances produced by female sellers in a traditional market in a traditional market in Batu Sangkar. The data were taken by the observational method with note-taking, recording, and interviewing techniques. The analysis was done by using the concept proposed by (Oktavianus & Revita, 2013; Leech, 1983). The result of the analysis was descriptively done and used the chart. The percentage was also used to identify the number of maxims that occurred. Having analyzed the data, it is found that the female sellers used four maxims in their interaction with the buyers. They are 1) tact, 2) agreement, and 3)modesty. There are two types of agreement between the sellers and the buyers, namely using 1) verbal and 2) non-verbal agreement. The non-verbal agreement is the indication of the insincerity of the sellers of the price bargained by the buyers. The sellers do not get much profit from the price offered by the buyers.

Abstract

The article aims to describe the implementation blended learning environment in teaching writing skills. The research is based on the blended learning framework that integrates face-to-face methods and online learning methods. The face-to-face method is given to see students' activeness in delivering ideas and brainstorming before writing essays. The online learning method is used to see students' ability to elaborate ideas from drafting to become a complete essay. Thus, students can be effective in learning in class to discuss their draft an essay and not spend much time writing. The implementation of blended learning was distributed to three session: brainstorming, drafting, and final writing. The evaluation was done for each cycle. After the evaluation, students get feedback for their performance in the previous session. The result post-test shows that students in the experimental class have indicated a significant improvement in essay writing performance with significance 0,06>0,05 with an average score of 76,35. The result of the research is very important as a framework to develop learning models for teaching writing at universities.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a model of interactive learning media by focusing on online activities with synchronous and asynchronous models to improve the quality of English learning. The study provides some discussion about preparing an interactive online learning by deploying various types of activities which group into synchronous and asynchronous activities. The method used in the research is research and development method which follows ADDIE model. The data collected from English skill class which include Elementary Reading and Writing and Elementary Listening and Speaking. The result of the study shows effective model for developing interactive medias for teaching English skill. It is very important to design learning activities aligned with the learning outcomes and learning objectives. To create an effective online learning environment, teachers should consider about the interactivity of the learning activities and the mode of content delivery. Both synchronous and asynchronous activities have benefits and drawback. Hence to get a maximum benefit of online learning, teachers need to combine synchronous and asynchronous activities and design which activities should be delivered in each mode.
