Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui maksud penggunaan kata-kata tertentu dan Black English serta slang Amerika dalam lirik lagu tersebut dan hubungannya dengan latar belakang kehidupan Eminem dahulu. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Analisis penelitian ini terfokus pada kata-kata yang digunakandan ragam bahasa Black English dan slang Amerika yang terdapat dalam lirik lagu Mockingbird.. Penulis mengaitkan teori analisis wacana kritis dengan teori transkultural Pennycook, black English, dan slang Amerika, untuk menganalisis lirik lagu tersebut dan melihat penyebaran budaya hiphop. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa terdapat hubungan antara latar belakang kehidupan Eminem dengan penggunaan kata-kata tertentu dalam lirik lagunya.Kata Kunci: analisis wacana, black English, bahasa slang Amerika, Mockingbird

Abstract

Learning is the process of interaction between students between students and educators by involving parents and learning resources in the atmosphere of learning and playing in PAUD units or programs. Learning activities in early childhood are essentially concrete curriculum development in the form of a set of plans that contain a number of learning experiences through play given to early childhood based on the potential and developmental tasks that must be mastered in order to achieve the competencies that must be possessed by children. Learning methods that can be used in teaching English in kindergarten are MASAK learning methods (Easy, Fun, Casual, Active, Creative). It aims to foster children's courage in expression in English so that children are interested in ongoing learning activities. The MASAK learning model invites children to directly interact with their friends, take action, and is a fun activity, so that children will easily remember vocab or vocabulary. The role of a teacher in providing learning media that is interesting and easy for children to understand is needed. Explicitly, this activity aims to explain the procedures and benefits of applying the MASAK learning method in vocabulary learning and English speaking skills to the teachers PAUD RA Bintang Sembilan Cipayung, Depok. From the results of the implementation of community service activities, several conclusions are given as follows: (1) The COOK Method (Easy, Fun, Casual, Active, Creative) is one of the right methods to be used in teaching English, especially vocabulary and listening to children with fun and easy way. (2) Teachers can utilize the use of the COOK method in conveying learning about mastering English vocabulary. (3) Schools can utilize the COOK method to support learning so as to improve the quality of learning and produce quality learning.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyse a semantic analysis of phrasal verbs produced by Hillary Clinton in her commencement speech. The writer focused on the implied meanings and the phrasal verbs used by Hillary Clinton during her speech at Wellesley College in 2017. In this analysis, the writer used a qualitative descriptive method and a library research technique to collect the data. In analysing the implied meanings of phrasal verbs, the writer applied Geoffrey Leech’s theory. According to the result, the writer found that there were 10 or 25% phrasal verbs with conceptual meaning, 4 or 10% phrasal verbs with connotative meaning, 16 or 39% phrasal verbs with affective meaning, 7 or 17% phrasal verbs with social meaning, and 3 or 9% with thematic meaning. Therefore, the most dominant meaning in phrasal verbs produced by Hillary Clinton was affective meaning. Meanwhile, in analysing the phrasal verbs, the writer used the theory from Larsen-Freeman and Celce-Murcia. There were three types of phrasal verbs categorized into literal phrasal verbs, aspectual phrasal verbs, and idiomatic phrasal verbs. It can be concluded that there were 17 or 42% literal phrasal verbs, 10 or 25% aspectual phrasal verbs, and 13 or 33% idiomatic phrasal verbs. Thus, the most frequent type of phrasal verbs used during the speech were literal phrasal verbs.

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying and analyzing the types and levels of questions available in the ninth grade English language test which are used in Junior High School in Depok during the academic year 2012-2013.The purpose of the analysis was to determine the distribution of the questions over the six levels of the new version of Bloom's Taxonomy of the cognitive domain. A classroom test does not focus only on students’ knowledge or problems with the language, but furthermore, it is concerned with evaluation for the purpose of enabling teachers to increase their own effectiveness by making adjustment in their teaching. The sample of the study consisted of the Ninth grade English language test where the researcher analyzed 50 questions. A study analysis sheet was prepared and used in the classification of the questions according to the new version of Bloom's Taxonomy to achieve the purposes of the study. The results show that understanding the levels of questions is necessary. They lead the students to have deep understanding toward the questions presented, so that in answering the questions, they will become easier to answer. In light of the results, the researcher recommended to improve the questions in the English test to cover the six levels of the new version of Bloom's Taxonomy and to train teachers and designers of curriculum to use and write questions following the new version of Bloom's Taxonomy. Keywords: ninth grade, new version of Bloom's Taxonomy, English language test

Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe the strategies used by the translator in translating Balinese cultural words into English. The strategies in translation process should be defined as the consequence of translator’s effort to establish the exact meaning between two different language systems. A translator, in his attempt to transfer meaning from source language into target language, usually faces a set of problems; one of the problems is cultural words. It means to overcome the difficulties; the translator has proposed many possible strategies. The method used in this research is qualitative method. It means that all the data are words and sentences. In this research, descriptive can belong to qualitative research as there is a description of data from Indonesian and English book.And the sources of data used in this research is the Indonesian book Pantomime Suci Betara Berutuk Dari Trunyan, Bali (1985) by Prof. Dr. James Danandjaja and its English version Betara Berutuk Sacred Pantomime from Trunyan translated by the same person. The theory of translation strategies are the main theories used in this research. The theory is taken from Mona Baker, In other Words (1997). The use of translation strategies was analysed using her definitions.The data are classified into three main categories: translation using loan words, translation by cultural substitution, translation by paraphrasing and translation by general word. Translation using loan word is categorized into two sub-categories: transference and loan word plus explanation.
