Abstract

The research aims at analyzing the types of heroism of the main character and the cause of the emergence of the heroism in the movie ‘Percy Jackson Sea of Monster’. The research method used is descriptive qualitative to analyze the type of heroism of the main character and the cause of the emergence of the hero in the book. Analysis of the type of heroism is carried out using the Morison and Labiak’s theory, while analysis of the cause of emergence of the hero is carried out using Restivo and Cherry’s theory. Observations show that the hero in the book is the main character, Percy Jackson, and the type of heroism belongs to the type of perfect hero and epic hero. The observations also show that there are two factors that cause the emergence of the heroism which are bad situation, injustice and self-sacrifice.Keywords: type of heroism, main character and cause of the emergence of the heroism

Abstract

In this digital era 4.0, more and more people are realizing the importance of learning foreign languages, especially English. They learn through any source they can access digitally and one of the media used is through music and songs. But actually learning English through songs has its own challenges because song lyrics are often different from spoken language, one of which is the use of language style. This research aims at analyzing simile expressions found in the song lyrics of ‘Everything at Once’ by Lenka. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative to analyze the types of simile expressions found in the song lyrics. The analysis of the types of simile expressions is carried out using theory of Zhang and Fromilhague. The result of analysis shows that ‘Everything at Once’ song has 38 simile expressions and they all belong to the type of closed and explicit simile. Keywords: simile, song, lyrics.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Song is an artistic expression of feelings, ideas or thoughts. Sometimes the lyrics of a song are easy to understand, but sometimes the lyrics are so poetic that they are difficult to understand. .This research aims at analyzing figurative language found in the song lyrics of ‘Red’ by Taylor Swift. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative to analyze the types of figurative language found in the song lyrics and also the meaning of the figurative language. The analysis of the types of simile expressions is carried out using theory of Perrine and Rozakis. The result of the analysis shows that ‘Red’ song lyrics has eighteen figurative languages that belong to the type of simile, symbol, metaphor and hyperbole.  Keywords: figurative language, song, lyrics.

Abstract

Every language has literal and figurative meanings. Literal meaning is the direct reference of words or sentences to objects, while figurative meaning is used for giving an imaginative description or a special effect, just like idioms. This research aims at analyzing idiom expressions found in the story of The Red-headed League in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and in which categories the idiom expressions belong to. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative to analyze the idiom expressions and to categorize idiom expressions found in the novel. The analysis of idiom expressions is carried out using theory of O’Dell and McCarthy (2010:22), while the categorization of the idiom expression is carried out using theory of Loreto (1987:86) and Makkai (1972:117). From the analysis, twenty six idiom expressions are found in the story. Nineteen of them are categorized using theory of Loreto, while the other seven idiom expressions are categorized using theory of Makkai. Keywords: idiom expression, novel.
