Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Dental caries is a disease of dental hard tissue that is often found in children. The etiology of dental caries is very diverse and multifactorial, one of which is the decreased acidity of saliva. There are many efforts and ways to reduce the incidence of dental caries, one of which is the application of topical flour to the teeth. Casein phosphopeptide–amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) as a type of topical flour used has been shown to reduce demineralization and increase tooth remineralization. This study aimed to determine the acidity level of saliva before and after application of CPP-ACP in children aged 8-9 years. Methods: Measurement of salivary acidity was measured using a digital pH meter in the study sample of 42 children consisting of 23 boys and 19 girls. Subjects were applied CPP-ACP for 1 month with the routine application once a week, then re-examined the salivary acidity level after 1 month. Result : The average result of salivary acidity before CPP-ACP application was 6.928 and after CPP-ACP application was 7.0611. The T-test resulted in a very significant difference in the level of salivary acidity before and after the application of CPP-ACP. Conclusion : is that Tthere are differences in the level of salivary acidity in children aged 8-9 years before and after topical application of CPP-ACP flour.

Abstract

[MKB. 2015;47(4):255–60]Kata kunci: Ectodermal dysplasia, gigi tiruan, oligodontiaOligodontia Management in Children 14 Years with Ectodermal Dysplasia Syndrome: Case ReportAbstractEctodermal dysplasia is a hereditary disorder that is rarely seen with approximately 7000 cases in the world. In this disorder, Ectodermal dysplasia occurs as a developmental disorder of organ structures derived from the ectodermal layer such as hair, teeth, nails, and sweat glands. This is a case report of ectodermal dysplasia in a 14-year-old girl with clinical manifestations of oligodontia (tooth loss, more than 6 teeth on the upper and lower jaw), thin and curly hair, abnormal toenail shape, and impaired excretion of sweat. The purpose of the treatment was to make the patient regains her esthetic and masticatory functions, which were disrupted by the absence of permanent tooth buds, as well as to maintain the normal growth of the developing jaws. Treatment for the patient’s with oligodontia included the use of removable denture in lower jaw and application of acrylic crowns on all upper and lower anterior teeth resulting in improved esthetics and masticatory function. It is concluded that the treatment has been able to improve the esthetics and to return the masticatory function of the patient while maintaining the normal growth of the jaws. Abstract

Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI) is an abnormal disease that occurs in hard tissue of teeth. Clinical features of Amelogenesis Imperfecta look like immature enamel that looks like hypomaturation. The etiology of AI is influenced by the TGF-?1 factor which is disturbed during the formation and development of enamel, one of which is caused by the presence of ENAM gene mutations. Further research on genetic history in the family and biomineralization of the formation of enamel important to be developed later.

Abstract

Background: The cause of cavities is initially due to roughness on the tooth surface, requiring fluoride varnish to prevent caries, as the varnish applies a fluoride compound to the tooth surface. Fluoride varnish reacts with the tooth enamel surface to form calcium fluoride and fluorapatite, thus making the enamel surface more resistant to demineralization and damage. Purpose: This study aims to compare the roughness of tooth enamel surfaces among three fluoride varnishes under acidic conditions. Methods: The research method uses three fluoride varnish materials: sodium fluoride 5% + tricalcium phosphate, calcium fluoride, and sodium fluoride 5% + casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate 2%. Samples of 81 teeth were divided into three groups (Group 1 without fluoride varnish application, Group 2 application of fluoride varnish with pH 3, and Group 3 application of fluoride varnish with pH 5). The teeth were tested before and after application of the varnishes using the scanning electron microscope and surface roughness tests. Results: The results showed a significant difference in the mean surface roughness of the enamel of the anterior deciduous teeth tested with fluoride varnish. The before and after comparisons in the pH 3 and pH 5 groups were very significant (p-value 0.000). The comparison results in each pH group after fluoride varnish administration showed no significant difference (pH 3 p-value 0.074 and pH 5 p-value 0.196). The tooth surfaces appear to be rougher after administration of an all-acid solution. Conclusion: There is a difference in surface roughness of primary teeth after being given fluoride varnish in low pH 3 immersion for 24 hours.

Abstract

Anxiety in pediatric patients is often found in dental practice. It is triggered by several components such as encountering unfami-liar adults, unfamiliar sounds and feelings, having to lie down for treatment, discomfort, and even pain. So that the need for be-havior management in pediatric patients in dental procedures. This case discusses the behavior management of a 6-year-old child who is accompanied by his mother and will undergo dental restoration treatment (ART). It is known that the child has a his-tory of unpleasant dental treatment and traumatizes the child in dental treatment. During the treatment process in dealing with the child's attitude, a combination of several behavior management techniques was applied such as tell-show-do, use of second lang-uage, and the presence of parents, where the application of these techniques succeeded in influencing the child's attitude which at the first appointment was negative to become positive at the second appointment and definitely positive at the third appoint-ment. It is concluded that it is important for dentists to analyze the proper technique in dealing with the behavior of pediatric patients so that dental treatment can run well and effectively.

Abstract

Dental caries is the most common oral problem in Indonesia, especially in school-age children and children with special needs. This study aims to determine the prevalence of caries in deaf children at Sekolah Luar Biasa (B) Cicendo and Prima Bhakti. This analytical observational study used a cross sectional design. Data were collected using purposive sampling technique by con-ducting oral examination based on ICDAS and Mount and Hume classification. The total sample was 92 deaf children aged 7-14 years. The prevalence of permanent first molar caries was 63% (232 teeth); based on the ICDAS classification, the highest pre-valence was in the non-cavitary/D1 carious lesion category, which was 33.1% (122 teeth), while based on the Mount and Hume classification, the highest prevalence was in category 1.1, which was 33.4% (123 teeth). It is concluded that 63% of the perma-nent first molar teeth observed had caries which may be due to the anatomical structure of the teeth which have narrow pits and fissures, poor brushing habits, and repeated exposure to cariogenic substances.
