Abstract

Translation cannot be separated from culture; therefore, a translator must have sufficient knowledge about the culture of the language that is going to be translated. This knowledge will help the translator to determine the most suitable equivalent of any text containing cultural elements. Euphemism is one of the texts. Euphemism is used to replace an expression that considered threatening the face of the speaker, the audience or some third party when it is uttered. Sex is the topic that will offend people when it is talked about openly. People in every culture tend to use euphemism when they talk about sex. However, different culture will see sex with different point of view.  This study aims to find out the differences through the translation of English sexual euphemistic expression into Indonesian. It will describe how those expressions are translated into Indonesian. This study is a descriptive qualitative study. The source of the data is an English novel by Eloisa James entitled Desperate Duchesses and its Indonesian version Memikat Kekasih. The result shows that English sexual euphemistic expressions in the novel are translated into Indonesian euphemisms, Indonesian dysphemisms, literal meaning, and description.

Abstract

Access to news in today's era is increasingly easy and practical with the presence of various social media (medsos) which have transformed into whatever the public wants. In fact, to maintain existence in the market, news that is culturally presented through the print dimension, as well as electronic media has limited access, in its development it can be reached only with the reach of one's hand. CNN news media, for example, utilizes social media by labeling official accounts to transfer information similar to other dimensions, one of which is Instagram, which contains information composed by visual and language constructions in the form of clauses/sentences. The lens of generative linguistics captures this linguistic phenomenon based on X-Bar analysis. This study aims to describe the structure of English and Indonesian verb phrases for Instagram news posts @cnn and @cnnindonesia. The results show that there are differences in the forms of verb phrases from the two languages. Verb phrases in English are more diverse due to the influence of tenses and in Indonesian they function as active and passive sentence markers.

Abstract

This research is carried out to investigate the types of flouting of maxims and the strategies used by the characters that occur within the background of power and social distance contexts in "All The Bright Places" movie. Moreover, this research is also aimed to reveal the reasons behind the execution of the flouting of maxims. This research is employed qualitative research. The data source of this research is presented in the form of words, phrases, and sentences containing flouting of the maxims obtained from the characters' utterances in the movie. The data were analyzed using Grice's cooperative principle theory, Cutting's theory of strategies to flout the maxims, Leech's theory of illocutionary functions of politeness, and Brown and Levinson's theory of social context. The research findings concluded that four types of flouting maxims are found in the characters' utterances: flouting the maxim of quantity, flouting the maxim of quality, flouting the maxim of manner, and flouting the maxim of relevance. Only three reasons for flouting the maxims were found of four types: competitive, collaborative, and conflictive. The most frequently used flouting maxim is flouting the maxim of quality which is aligned with the competitive reason as the most commonly used reason to flout the maxim.

Abstract

This research aims to classify the use of Javanese reduplication in words that are widely used by Javanese people in particular through word formation analysis (dwipurwa; dwilingga; dwiwasana) and the function of Javanese reduplication for the people/population in Java, of course. This research study uses a qualitative descriptive method. Therefore, this research specifically analyzes word formation in Javanese reduplication/word repetition/reduplication using the criteria/types of Javanese reduplication (dwipurwa; dwilingga; dwiwasana). The data in this research are words/reduplications in Javanese. The data source in this research is Javanese language society/culture. Supporting sources for this research are relevant articles and journals regarding language reduplication. Data was collected using critical analysis techniques, reading techniques, and continued with note-taking techniques. The data analysis technique used to obtain data is through three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this research can be concluded that there are 40 data in total, each of which is divided into 10 data according to the Javanese language reduplication category. The function of Javanese reduplication, for example, is for emphasis, expressivity, aesthetics, etc

Abstract

This research looks into the complicated steps kids take to learn grammar, focusing on how socioeconomic status (SES), being bilingual, and getting help early on affect this process. The introduction shows how important it is to understand how syntax develops in order to make educational practices more effective and open to everyone. To test syntactic learning, the method uses a mix of experimental, quasi-experimental, and naturalistic observation methods. Structured experiments and longitudinal studies are two important ways to study language development over time. Structured experiments control variables and measure syntactic knowledge and production. The results show that SES has a big effect on how syntax develops, with environments with higher SES giving stronger linguistic input. When learning grammar, being bilingual can be both hard and helpful, depending on how old you are when you start learning and how often you use the language. Children who are at risk of language delays gain a lot from early interventions, especially those that focus on improving phonological awareness and vocabulary. The talk makes it clear that early and focused interventions are needed to reduce differences in outcomes based on socioeconomic status and improve the development of syntax in both bilingual and monolingual children. The results support using research-based linguistic knowledge in the classroom to help all students do better with language, but especially those who have developmental language problems.
