Abstract

Yogyakarta is one of the provinces where people are still aware of their oral tradition. Oral tradition as a culture contains aspects of life of a society. Types of oral tradition are verbal oral traditions, half-oral traditions, and non-verbal (material) oral traditions. Narrating the tradition in written form becomes an effort in documentation, both in Javanese and Indonesian narratives. To translate it from the original language (Javanese) to Indonesian language creates some problems. The narrative script of the oral tradition still requires a lot of improvements in terms of language and the content of story. This research aims to train and assist people of Yogyakarta to write down their oral traditions. The activity specifcally aims to create texts of oral tradition in Yogyakarta which can be published into a semi popular book. The program, then, should be followed up by cultural discussions on oral tradition in Yogyakarta.

Abstract

Disagreement is a difference of opinion expressed differently based on the media used. Based on this phenomenon, it is interesting to define an expression of disagreement and the types of discourse that trigger it on Facebook, which tends to be accessible and not distant. Analyzing these two things is interesting and important as something new in pragmatic studies. This study aims to define the expression of disagreement and describe the types of messages that get a lot of disagreement responses in the ICJ Facebook group. The current research utilized a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The data in this study are messages and comments that contain disagreement in the ICJ Facebook group. Data collection was carried out using documentation, observation, and note-taking techniques. The data analysis technique utilizes semantic and pragmatic perspectives. The results showed that the expression of disagreement could be defined as a negative expression expressed verbally as a reaction when the speaker opposes or denies the opponent's proposition or vice versa in a communication context. Posts or messages that get a lot of disagreement responses have the following characteristics, 1) the topics discussed relate to the disclosure of social problems from a personal point of view, 2) aim to assess social phenomena or as social criticism, 3) type of expressive and persuasive discourse.

Abstract

The playfulness of English is the result of language interference, which can be a source of creating new English variations. The purpose of this study is to describe the form of English playfulness by hawkers at Kuta Beach, Lombok, and the factors of English playfulness. The method is descriptive qualitative. The data collection by ‘simak libat cakap’ or involved conversation observation technique, recording, and taking notes technique. The data analysis method is reduction, presentation, and conclusion. Data analysis shows that the playfulness of English by hawkers comes from loan translation in the form of reduplication of Indonesian and Sasak words into English. There are two forms of loan translation: a change in the meaning of English in accordance with Sasak and Indonesian, and not experiencing a change in meaning but experiencing the addition of English meaning in accordance with Sasak and Indonesian. The factors causing the English playfulness are internal factors such as the difference in vocabulary structure from Sasak and Indonesian to English and the influence of Indonesian and Sasak as the dominant language. Factors external the language are influential in English playfulness, such as level of education, economic status, occupation, regional origin, and the situation of speech.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the concept of ambyar in Javanese pop dangdut songs. This research is descriptive qualitative and quantitative research applying Roland Barthes’s semiotic approach and Lecay's representation theory. The data was collected through observation, transcription, and closed interviews. The data taken from Guyon Waton’s song lyrics are categorized into primary data consisting of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences and secondary data in audio consisting of high and low notes and repetition of lyrics. Furthermore, closed interviews were conducted to collect information related to the representation of ambyar, which develops in society. The results show that ambyar in Guyon Waton’s song lyrics is represented through disappointment, heartbreak, abandonment, and unrequited love. On the other hand, the contradicting lyrics describe ambyar as an attitude of resignation, fast move on, and toughness. It indicates a cultural change that develops in society. Therefore, the meaning of ambyar expands as evident by the results of interviews that illustrate the positive meaning of ambyar in events, food, and activities. In contrast, it remains negative in the context of politics, education, and love.
