Abstract

The COVID 19 has been going on since April 2020 in Indonesia. It has resulted in the Indonesian government, especially the Ministry of Education and Culture, taking preventive steps to minimize contracting the virus. One of them is using online learning for students to go to school. However, there are challenges for teachers and students while learning in an online class, such as students who are often absent, students will quickly feel bored, students tend to be passive in the learning process, students do not master the learning material, and much more. It also happens in an English lesson, especially a dialogue activity. This research aims to prove whether using a board game can be effective media to reduce students’ language anxiety level or not during English learning in an online classroom. The kind of board game is the combination between snake and ladder and candy land, or it has been modified based on learning purpose. The research design used in this research is a quasi-trial non-equivalent control group design. The samples of this research are 60 ninth grades of junior high school students which are divided into the trial and control group. Data analyses used in this research are using SPSS mean score, data deviation, while hypothesis testing used in this research is the Mann-Whitney test.  The result showed that a board game can reduce students’ anxiety levels. The data showed that the mean score of students after implementing board game reduces by 2.90 points, while the standard deviation increases by 2.901 points. From the Mann-Whitney test, it is known that Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.003 or < 0.05 which shows that H0 is rejected, and H1 is accepted. From the data analysis, it can be shown that the board game is effective media to reduce students’ language anxiety in dialogue activity during learning in an online class. Keywords: board game, language anxiety, online learning

Abstract

In modern age, people can learn or acquire a second language with the help of technology. The development of technology allows people to create an application called Digital-Based Language Learning (DGBLL). An example of a game application used during research is Studycat’s “Fun English”. This thesis discusses the useof DGBLL in the learning of English vocabulary as a second language. This research is aimed to identify phonemes that are difficult to be pronounced by Indonesian children, to identify the supporting factors for second language acquisition, and to compare the results of before and after the use of DGBLL in children. The writer uses the purposive sampling method, participant observation or referred as the Simak Bebas Libat Cakap technique, and recording technique in collecting data. The recorded data will be analyzed in contrastive analysis method to investigate which phonemes are difficult for children to pronounce. There are three findings of the research. First, the findings show most of the children as subjects find it hard to pronouncethe phonemes [ʤ]; [ʈʃ]; [ð]; [θ]; [æ]; [ʌ]. Second, the findings show that an essential part a second language learning is motivation to learn the language. Third, DGBLL is a useful tool to improve the subjects’ English vocabulary. Keywords: DGBLL; second language acquisition; contrasitive analysis

Abstract

Many factors influence the second language acquisition process for adulthood. One of the factors is the prior language (L1) that a person possesses. This research analyses the role of prior language in adults who are claimed hardly to acquire a second language (L2). This research also tried to figure out how the L1 affects the L2. This research is supposed to know whether L1 prevents adults from acquiring a second language or, instead, L1 helps adults acquire a second language (L2). It is descriptive qualitative research. The instruments are questionnaires via Google form and voice records to be analysed with the Speech Analyzer application. The population is employees who work in the branch office of a construction company with a total of about 100 employees. Their L1 is Indonesian, and their L2 is English. The sampling method used is a random sampling from various company divisions that communicate with foreign co-workers or clients and deal with documents written in English. This research shows that prior language determines adults’ accents and pronunciation, interpreting the meaning, processing the information in L1 then producing it in L2. Significantly, the prior language does help adults acquire English as a second language.
