Abstract

This paper is by no means a comprehensive account of liberal democracy or more accurately, American liberal democracy in global era aftermath 9/11. In fact, it is intended to be more suggestive than comprehensive in getting any deep meaning of American Studies approach though it is characterized by more American Studies framework than controversy issues in details.  In short, it is a brief note on American Studies, mainly on the subject of democracy, one of the American traits and values. Abstract

This study is intended to reveal the effects of American popular culture in our home, mainly Rap music and Hip Hop music by American studies along with synthesis of knowledge. This article also highlights on how to study artifact of popular culture  well,  to understand more about culture, to establish a clear concept of what contextual, connotation and deep meaning of lyrics in the songs, and to get better understanding of the strong as a whole as responses toward the existence of American cultural imperialism and American hegemony in Indonesia. Globalization of media is also discussed to know how the information technology advancement of the media influences the norms and values of the society. The media has become a struggle tool in demanding a change and improvement, as well as a tool for a series of interest. Abstract

A basic premise of this article is that the institutional teaching of translation studies has evolved in the past years partly due to a growing connection between theory and teaching practice. The present article focuses on how translation process in theories and practices, on why theory is important for the teaching of the profession, and on the nature of theory. This discussion leads to a fundamental concern for the training of future translators for professional work. It is argued that translation trainees should be exposed to a variety of approaches to translation which are inspired by and connect to different theoretical schools so that students are in this way taught to be flexible in their approach to texts and will also learn theory in practical application.   KEYWORDS: translation theories, translation practices, teaching, translation types, translator

Abstract

This paper is intended to reveal political satires in the American media, mainly it reflects in JibJab.com’s animated caricatures on the concentration of Obama’s Presidential Champaign. It is also to discern the deep meaning of the satirical drawing in Obama’s presidential election and to disclose how satire takes a part in Obama’s campaign. Politics, social, and culture are to be prominent disciplines associated with the phenomenon of animated caricatures of Obama’s presidential campaign. There are three functions of satirical drawing in American politics as follows: satirical animated caricature as the symbolic interaction, satirical drawing as the social control, and satirical caricature as the political correctness. Some significant values are also correlated with the political caricatures such as freedom of expression, democratic values, and the equality values. This analysis describes the contribution of the political satires in the time of Obama’s presidential election, used as tools for campaign, and tools to influence the voters. Abstract

This paper discusses some important issues concerning how to give the meanings of democracy in line with the changing of era and models of democracy. It explores some characteristics of two figures: Thomas Jefferson and Gus Dur of Indonesia, characteristics of democracy, and comparison of their ideas about democracy. Thus, it focuses on some ideas of democracy between Thomas Jefferson and Gus Dur whose position as two figures of democracy.  It also examines how far the impact of their great ideas in the development of democracy in their own countries, Indonesia and America. The historical, philosophical, political, sociological, and cultural aspects of Jefferson and Gus Dur on democracy will be systematically discussed. In addition to that, it also discusses the description of democracy, the background of American and Indonesian democracy, Jefferson’s and Gus Dur’s concepts of demoracy and some other related issues to democracy.   Key words : Thomas Jefferson, Gus Dur, democracy, interdisciplinary approach, liberalism

Abstract

  Some indispensable factors influencing in students’ motivation are such as their interest in and enthusiasm for the material used in the class and the level of their persistence with the learning tasks. Those factors are going to applied in American Literature class through some literary analysis. Literary analysis invites students to the ongoing debate about the place of the theory and practice in the literature classroom. This article helps students develop and articulate their interpretations from a variety of theoretical approaches by equipping them with the critical tools for reading. The writer only highlights four literary analysis on American literature in views of  poems and prose. These primary texts include Joseph Bruchac’s poem “The Circle of Thanks”, Thomas King’s “Border”, Waldo Emerson’s “Self-Reliance, and Whitman’s “Crossing Brooklin Ferry”. Not all theories but some are discussed in details in this article. As a final point, these types of involvement are something that can not be imposed; it must come from the materials and courses that are implemented in the classroom.   Keywords: Literary analysis, criticism, interpretation, American literature, theory and practice

Abstract

Conservatism is a very interesting issue to be studied. Moreover, conservatism is often seen with a negative connotation. This is reasonable because conservatism is a term that is quite elusive and often debated. This paper focuses on the cultural-philosophical dimension of globalization and the cultural traits of American conservatism. Moreover the world today is on the threshold of a new global capitalism, one which constitutes not only opportunities, but keep risks for development. The opportunities for development and great risks are found in all dimensions of globalization. In this case, humans are positioned as main actors on how to preserve the cultural traits. They can be agents of determinism in their home. In addition Indonesia has experienced the same process of global evolvement as many other countries have. Democracy, fairness, intellectual improvement and dedication towards an independent country considered as recent values, are from the inter-relation of thoughts and cultures between Indonesia and other countries.
