Abstract

This article reviews two texts used in ‘National Examination Try-out II of 2013/2014 Senior High Schools’ since to the best of the writers’ knowledge the two texts do not represent good texts for a language test. In this respect, the writer shall review the test based on grammaticality, coherence and cohesion of the texts under study. However, it should be noted that this article does not necessarily mean that the writer would discredit the test writer since several factors, such as hectic time, low payment, overloaded teaching tasks, may influence the validity and reliability of the test being produced. Recommended in this article include: (1) the use of authentic texts taken from English newspaper or cyber resources, (2) proofreading prior to publication. Abstract

This study is aimed at finding illocutionary acts and the speech function of the main characters in Khaled Hosseini's novel "A Thousand Splendid Suns", particularly the part one of the novel. This research is designed in descriptive qualitative. The procedure of analyzing the utterances is based on the criteria proposed by Searle (1997) and Schiffrin (1994). The results show that the utterances produced by the main characters in part one of the novel are mostly using directive, followed by commissives and representative, but rarely with expressives. There is no declarative at all in the part one of the novel. Key words: Novel, utterance, illocutionary act, speech function

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the use of graphs for assessing writing for the studenst of the second semester of economics and business faculty, Unisbank Semarang. The method of this study is a mixed method inasmuch as the data were analyzed both in quantitative and qualitative method. The participants are ten students of the second semester of economics and business faculty, Unisbank Semarang. It reveals that the use of graphs can be effective to improve writing skill. However, the biggest obstacle was found when using this kind of method. That is why it is also important to take a look at the students’ background of knowledge because each student has their own characteristics and ability. Keywords: assessing writing, graphs, paragraph.
