Abstract

The spread of hoaxes through digital media, especially political ones, has become increasingly widespread, with 2,882 hoax content cases handled by Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital in early 2024. Of these, 203 were election-related hoaxes. Hoaxes during elections are often used as propaganda to influence public opinion and election results. This research, using quantitative content analysis, aimed to examine political communication related to hoaxes in the 2024 Indonesian Presidential Election. The study found that misleading and manipulative hoaxes were used to attack political opponents, mostly through videos on YouTube and TikTok. Hoaxes involving Artificial Intelligence are also on the rise. Political hoaxes are often planned and executed by parties supporting or opposing specific candidates. The Prabowo-Gibran pair and President Jokowi were the main targets. Those spreading hoaxes are typically opponents of certain candidates and the current government. These hoaxes are designed to create hostility and harm political opponents, with strong political motives. Trusted fact-checking teams play a crucial role in helping the public avoid being misled by providing digital literacy on the truth of information.

Abstract

This study aims to identify public sentiment and analyze opinion polarization related to the "Indonesia Gelap" phenomenon on social media. This phenomenon emerged as a form of public protest with government policies, which was expressed through the hashtag #IndonesiaGelap. The research method used Social Media Analysis (SMA). The results showed a significant spike in mentions, reach, and engagement on social media related to this phenomenon, especially in mid-February 2025 which was triggered by student demonstrations. Negative sentiment dominated the conversation, indicating public dissatisfaction with government policies. The polarization of public opinion was also clearly visible, with various groups having different views, especially regarding political figures and national issues. Social media has been shown to play a role as a trigger for polarization through the spread of emotional content and opinion manipulation. Meanwhile, news portals have the potential to form consensus through credible reporting. The study concludes that the  “Indonesia Gelap” phenomenon has sparked intense and polarized discussions on social media, with significant impacts on public opinion and social dynamics. The study recommends improving digital media literacy, developing responsible social media platforms, and strengthening regulations to address polarization.
