Abstract

Quantification the Dissolved and Particulate organic carbon in marine waters is an essential step towards ecosystem modeling and understanding carbon sequestration processes. A detailed view of estimated and recorded carbon concentration from Arctic to Antarctic is the prime goal of this review. This review compiles some of the important research work carried out in quantifying the organic carbon available in off shore and open waters and in coral reef environment. The cited literatures were collected, grouped and carefully analyzed to give a comprehensive view on current status of marine environment with regard to distribution of dissolved and particulate organic carbon. Keywords: DOC, POC, continental shelf waters, open sea waters, coral reef environment.

Abstract

Ragavan P, Ravichandran K, Mohan PM, Sxaena A, Prasanth RS, Jayaraj RSJ, Saravanan S. 2015. Note on Excoecariaindica (Willd.) Muell.-Arg, 1863 (Euphorbiaceae), from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India; a data deficient species. Biodiversitas 16: 22-26. Excoecaria indica (Wild.) Muell.-Arg was recorded from Middle Andaman and Great Nicobar Island representing a newaddition to the mangrove flora of the, Andaman and Nicobar islands. This species is characterized by its thorny trunk, crenulatelanceolateleaves and cherry-sized green fruits containing three seeds. Information about E. indica is inadequate, and it is recognized asdata deficient species. Further studies and conservation measures are imperative for managing the mangrove diversity of the islands withregards to this species.

Biodiversitas 15: 251-260. Sonneratia lanceolata, Sonneratia x urama andSonneratia x gulngai was collected from Great Nicobar Island, which representing a new addition to the mangrove flora of India. S.lanceolata is distinguished from S. caseolaris by its drooping branches, lanceolate leaves and ovoidal bud without medial constriction.S. x urama and S. x gulngai are putative hybrids. S. x urama is putative hybrid between S. alba and S. lanceolata, whereas S. x gulngai is putative hybrid between S. alba and S. caseolaris. A detailed description along with colour plate and relevant notes is provided for further collection and identification of these species in the field.

Distribution of mangrove species reported as rare in Andaman and Nicobar islands with their taxonomical notes. Biodiversitas 15: 12-23. During the recent field survey it was found that among 15 rare mangroves in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, ten rare species i.e. Acanthus ebracteatus, Acrostichum speciosum, Bruguiera cylindrica, Cynometra iripa, Cynometra ramiflora, Lumnitzera racemosa, Rhizophora hybrids, Sonneratia alba, Sonneratia griffithii and Xylocarpus mekongensis are present in Andaman and Nicobar islands. In addition to Acanthus volubilis, Brownlowia tersa and Sonneratia ovata are recorded after their first report.
