Abstract

Background: Intraocular surgery releases prostaglandin. Prostaglandin caused miosis and inflammatory reaction. Flurbiprofen and Indomethacin are antiprostaglandin agents. Objectives: This study was aimed to compare the effects of flurbiprofen and indomethacin eye drop and flurbiprofen tablet orally in preventing surgically induced miosis to dilated pupils during extracapsular cataract surgery. Methods: Measurement of the diameter of dilated pupil before and during extracapsular cataract surgery. Analysis variance and Tukey Studentized Rest Test were used to analyse the result. Results: No statitical significant difference was found in pupil diameter among the three groups except the stage of capsulotomy and inspiration-aspiration among those who received flurbiprofen and indomethacin eye drops. Conclusion: Flurbiprofen 0.03% eye drop was significantly stronger than Indomethacine eye drop 0.1% in preventing surgically induced miosis at extracapsular cataract surgery especially in both stage of capsulotomy and inspiration-aspiration and type manipulation. Keywords: cataract surgery - anterior capsulotomy - lens extraction - insiparition-aspiration - miosis -antiprostaglandin

Abstract

Glaucoma is a unity of complex eye disorders with abnormal intraocular pressure that is enough to cause increasing cupping-ratio and visual field defect. Blindness due glaucoma is irreversible. The progress of early glaucoma can be prevented by controlling intraocular pressure at normal range using either medicament or alternative treatment i.e. massage onto the eyeball to increase the outflow facility through the trabeculum meshwork. Therefore, early diagnosis is very important and professional examination is essential. A case of an early glaucoma is reported. Treatment with asetazolamide and thymolol maleate eye drop, continued with massage onto the eyeball, had been successfull to decrease and control the intraocular pressure at normal range. Pain was disappearing and visual field defect returned to normal. Futher follow up is needed.Key words: Glaucoma - early diagnosis - controlling intra occular pressure - massage onto eyeball

Abstract

Extirpation of eyelid benign tumor, while the vision is still good, must be followed by lid reconstruction to protect the eyeball. The means of such reconstruction to make the lid function are optimal. A case of lid reconstruction after lid benign tumor extirpation with the remain of skin and the orbicular oculi muscle has been reported. The reconstruction was carried out by replacing the lost tarsoconjunctival tissue with the opposite tarsoconjuncdval tissue. The blepharoraphy was maintained until the cicatrical tissue formation was completed. Key Words: lid tumor extirpation - reconstruction of superior levator palpebral muscle - replacement of tarsoconjunctival tissue - blepharoraphy - ophthalmic surgery

Abstract

The classification of primary glaucoma is based on the depth of the iridocorneal angle. Supartoto et al. found in Dr. Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta, that the cases of angle-closure glaucoma were thee times more than the open-angle glaucoma.Kolker & Hetherington stated that the open-angle glaucoma are 60 - 70% of the primary glau- coma in adults: The study on the iridocorneal angle in normal eye of random samples at the Eye Clinic, Dr Sardjito Hospital was done. The results support the statement of Kolker & Hetherington.Key Words: iridocorneal angle -- primary glaucoma -- open angle glaucoma -- angle closure glaucoma -- ophthalmology

Abstract

Timolol maleat, a new beta-adrenergic blocking agent, lowers intraocular pressure by decreasing actuous productiOri. It available in 0.25%;and 0.50% solution as an eye drop. The systemic effect of the timolol maleat 0.26% eye drops were observed among healthy medical students: The pulse rate and systolic blood pressure were insignificantly decreased but diastolic blood pressure was, insignificantly increased.Key Words: timolol maleat -- beta-adrenergic blocking agents -- blood pressure -- pulse rate -- intraocular pressure

Abstract

The normal position of the eyeball in the orbit is called euophthalmos. The enlargement of tissues inside the orbit will cause protrusion of the eyeball, which is called exophthalmos. Exophthalmos is one of the symptoms of some diseases either local or systemic.Exophthalmometry is a method of measuring the position of the eyeball in the orbit. Normal value of euophthalmos is 16 mm.Exophthalmometry among the population of Yogyakarta was done and discussed in this paper.Key Words: eyeball - orbit - euophthalmos exophthalmos - exophthalmometry

Abstract

Trachoma is a specific communicable keratoconjunctivitis, usually of chronic evolution caused by an agent belonging to the psittacosis - lymphogranuloma - trachoma group of atypical viruses and characterized by follicles, papillary hyperplasia, pannus, and in its later stages, by cicatrizadon". it is a well known eye disease in Indonesia, since many districts have their specific names for trachoma. The progress of trachoma depends on sociohygienic condition in the environment. The progress of trachoma in an area is indicated by its frequency in the area.An investigation of the disease among pupils will give a lower frequency than in the community, but it is valid as a parameter of the progress of the disease.Key Words: communicable disease - trachoma eradication - school health units - keratoconjunctivitis - trachoma
