Abstract

This study aims to develop English reading materials needed by students of Vocational School and develop English reading materials for students of Audio Video Program based on Contextual Teaching and Learning. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through six phases; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. It was conducted in SMK N 1 PercutSei Tuan, especially grade X. The data were gathered by administering interview and distributing questionnaire to 23 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which contain English for Audio Video program.The average scores are the first from English lecturer and the second from English teacher. It means that the developing materials categorized as suitable or approriate for grade X of Audio Video program. Key words: Research and Development (R & D), reading materials, Audio Video Program.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the ability of tenth-grade students of SMA Swasta Imelda Medan in answering reading comprehension question of Higher Order Thinking Skills based on Curriculum 2013 with essay question of Narrative Text legend story. This research was conducted with Quantitative-Descriptive method. The data analysis was a test that consist of 3 analysing level question, 2 evaluating level question and 1 creating level question. Total 6 essay HOTS question with the text was Narrative Text legend story. The test was taken from 30 students of class X-MIPA SMA Swasta Imelda Medan. This research has found that the ability of the tenth-grade students of SMA Swasta Imelda Medan was poor. With the mean of Analysing 49.07; Evaluating 51.25; and Creating 28.3. The number of students who got excellent in analysing were 8 students, evaluating has 10 students and creating only has good category with 2 students. From this research, students should improve their creative and critical thinking. And teachers also need to take more attention to guide the students.keywords: Ability, HOTS, Reading Comprehension, and Narrative Text

Abstract

The researcher has found a problem that speaking skills learning is not optimal because of inappropriate media that are used in online learning. Therefore, most students do not have the ability to speak or respond to the oral question directly even, it is just a greeting. The study's methodology is grounded in R&D efforts in the field of education. In their model, Gall et al. (2003) The study's findings utilized to build or design new items in certain methods. Then they were rigorously field-tested, assessed, and refined until they met the required requirements of efficacy, quality, or a comparable level. The way to make AVM suitable for this, is by the process of collecting data to gain student needs. By the process of collecting data in terms of students’ necessities, lacks, and wants, the researcher knows how to build a material as a content of this AVM. The way how Animaker develop the AVM is Animaker have an advantage to support AVM become interesting and suitable. By the diversity of template, background, transition, and character, Animaker has succeed to support and develop AVM to interpret what the students’ need. In fact, this AVM gained score 89% which indicated “excellent”Keywords: Speaking, Audio-Visual Media, Animaker
