Abstract

Settlement has become a very important basic need in human life since humans began living sedentary lives. During the ancient Balinese period of the IX to XIV centuries AD, settlements developed under the rule of ancient Balinese kings. The target of this research is the ancient Balinese settlements based on inscription sources in the Tabanan Regency area, especially the ancient settlements in Lake Bratan, Tamblingan, and Buyan, the Batukaru mountains, and the lowlands in the Tabanan area. The method used in this research is a combination of inscription and toponymy. By tracing the inscriptions, old maps, and RBI maps, as well as the archaeological data currently available, five ancient settlements were found. The five ancient settlements are the villages of Timpag, Bantiran, Batungsel, Batunya, and Mayungan. The results of this research are expected to foster the ability to choose, develop, and maintain settlements and the natural environment around settlements for the sake of the continuity of people's lives, which is also local wisdom that needs to be inherited.

Abstract

This research seeks to critically examine the commodification of traditional Balinese wedding ceremonies that occur at Taman Prakerti Bhuana, which offers Balinese wedding services in a more attractive and prestigious package. The study aims to understand how sacred cultural practices, rich in spiritual meaning, are transformed into commercial products focused on consumer satisfaction and economic gain. The issues will be addressed by answering the following research questions: (1) What is the form of commodification of traditional Balinese wedding ceremonies at Taman Prakerti Bhuana, (2) Why does the commodification of traditional Balinese wedding ceremonies occur at Taman Prakerti Bhuana, and (3) What are the implications of the commodification of traditional Balinese wedding ceremonies at Taman Prakerti Bhuana. These issues are analyzed using the theories of religious commodification and Bourdieu's theory of practice, employing qualitative research methods. Data collection techniques include literature study, observation, and interviews, followed by interpretative analysis. The research findings indicate that this phenomenon leads to the degradation of traditional values such as "menyama braya," a concept of togetherness and mutual cooperation in Balinese society. The commodification of these ceremonies also impacts the social dynamics of the local community, reducing active community participation and eroding the spirit of mutual cooperation. Ultimately, this study highlights the challenges faced in preserving Balinese culture, where traditional rituals that undergo changes to meet market demands risk losing their authenticity and original meaning. Abstract

A number old Bali inscriptions provide informations about past settlements scattered in many parts of Bali, and one of those is in northern part of the island. This research aims to reconstruct cultural history through epigraphic and toponymy studies as a foundation of historiography. Data collected through literature studies and surveys and analysed through textual criticism, both external and internal, and identification of toponyms. Data synthesis was conducted by placing toponym data found in inscriptions in the context of Old Balinese History. The result of this research shows that the characteristic of Old Bali settlements in North Bali could be differentiated into two categories, i.e. coastal area settlements and mountainous area settlements. Coastal area settlements have locational patterns that follow coastal line. These settlements have important roles in trade activites. Mountainous area settlements have mountain as their orientation, and the locational patterns are adjusted according to its mountainous topography and environment, thus its locations are scattered and tend to close to plantation or agricultural area.

Abstract

This study explores the function and meaning of triangular decorative patterns (tumpal) on ancient tombstones in Central Lombok as a form of cultural heritage imbued with spiritual, aesthetic, social, and historical values. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and symbolic analysis, the research documents various motifs such as patra styled in jvala, winged sankha, padma, vegetal scrolls, and bamboo shoots, applied as both explicit and implicit tumpal forms. The findings reveal that these decorations serve magical, symbolic, aesthetic, and historical functions, as well as indicators of social stratification. Additionally, the motifs convey spiritual, cosmological, and life-death philosophy meanings deeply rooted in Lombok's local beliefs. The presence of Balinese and Hindu-Buddhist motifs on Islamic tombs indicates a strong cultural acculturation process. This study shows that decorative elements are not merely ornamental, but are visual representations of belief systems and cultural values passed down through generations.
