Abstract

AbstractThe Bunter Lake is an oxbow lake that receive water from the Kampar River during the rainy season. As the water flew to the lake, many types of fishes may be entered the lake. On the other hand, when there is no water input from the river, the fishes were trapped in the lake and fish catching activities conducted may affects the population of the fish in general. The presence of fish coming from the river and the fishing activities in the lake may affects the biodiversity of the fish in general. To understand the biodiversity of the fish in the lake during the rainy season, a study has been conducted on July to August 2021.  Samplings were conducted 6 times, 3 times during the rain/ flood and 3 times when there was no rain. The fish was captured using gillnet, 0.5 and 3 inch mesh size. The fish captured were identified. Results shown that there were 18 fish species that were belonged to 6 families. There were family Cyprinidae (Thynnichthys polylepis, T. thynnoides, Barbodes schwanenfeldi, Rasbora argyrotaeina, Barbichthys laevis, Osteochilus hasselti, Puntius bulu, Oxygaster anomarula, O. melanopleurus, Hampala macrolepidota dan Amblyrhynchichthys truncates), family Bagridae (Mystus nigriceps, M. nemurus), family Siluridae (Ompok hypophthalmus, Phalacronotus apogon), family Eleotridae (Oxyeleotris marmorata family Notopteridae (Notopteridae boornensis) The diversity index value (H') was 2.12, the dominance index (C) was 0.36 and the uniformity index (E) was 0.70. These data indicate that the diversity of fish in the Bunter Lake was   moderate. As the dominance index value (C) as well  the uniformity index value (E) were relatively low , the environmental condition of the lake is balance.     Keywords: oxbow lake, rainy season, fish capture, diversity index

Abstract

AbstractPangasiushypophthalmus is nocturnal fish that grow well in dark condition. In dark condition however, phytoplankton may be none, the water become rich in organic materials and this condition is match for developing parasites and pathogen that negatively affect the fish.  Tounderstand the health status of the fish in general, the histologcal structure gill, kidney and liver was investigated. The results were then compared to those obtained from fish taken from the Siak River. The research was conducted on Agustus-Desember 2019. There were 4 treatments applied, namely control (natural photoperiod), 18G(18 hours dark ) and 24G (24 hours dark), 3 repetitions/ treatment. Parameters  measured were survival  rate and the histological structure (gills, kidneys and liver). Samples were fixed in 5% formalin and histologically processed and stained with Haematoxylin Eosin. Results shown that in general the histological structure (gill, kidney and liver) of the treated fish and the fish from the Siak River are not different. There were abnormalities in the gill, such as hyperplasia, hypertrophy, odema and necrosis.  Inthe all fish there are Dactylogyrus sp parasites that may caused the gill damage. The histological structure of kidney and liver are normal. Data obtained indicate that the damage of the gill may caused by the presence of the parasite and it is not affected by the manipulated photoperiod.           Keywords: Health Status, Siak River, Histological Structure, Dactylogyrus sp.

Abstract

AbstractMystus nigriceps commonly inhabit the Tarai River that is polluted by tofu industrial liquid waste. Low water quality may affects fish growth and that is reflected in the growth ring pattern of the otolith. A research aims to understand the pattern of otolith growth rings in the M. nigriceps was conducted in April to May 2019. The fish was captured  using a cast net, and a scoop net. There were  90 fishes captured (31 males and 59 females). The otolith were removed and shaved. The dark growth ring pattern was investigated using a binocular microscope. Results shown that the standard length of the fish ranged from    75.11 to 150.44 mm and their body weight was 3.27 to 44.82 g. The otolith length was 1.375 to 2.625 mm and its width was ranged from 0.85 to 1.375 mm. Among the fish captured, 82 of them having 1-3 dark rings, indicate that the in certain period the growth of fish in the Tarai River is hampered. The distance between the nucleus and the first dark ring was 0.25 to 0.625 mm and there was no special pattern in the formation of the first dark ring. This fact indicate that the first dark rings are formed individually and it is not formed by periodic events in fish life. The water quality parameter value are as follows, temperature 27-280C; pH 6;  DO 3.2-3.5 mg/L; and CO2 23.09-24.98 mg/L) and it is able to support the life of fish. Keywords: dark ring, growth ring pattern, sagita, catfish, polluted river
