Abstract

This research aimed to find out the correlation between students’ writing ability and their vocabulary mastery of the eighth-grade students SMP Handayani Sungguminasa Gowa. The problem statement of the research was, “Is there any correlation between students’ writing ability and their vocabulary mastery?” The research used a Descriptive Research, the instrument of this study tested, namely writing ability (in terms of rewriting of the story in the film) test and vocabulary mastery test. The population of this research is to the eighth-grade students of SMP Handayani Sungguminasa Gowa which consists of 28 students, all of them were the sample. Therefore, this research used cluster sampling. The result of the data analysis shows that the students’ writing ability (in terms of rewriting of the story in the film) stated in 60.00 of the mean score, where their vocabulary mastery test stated 61.00 of the mean score. Coefficient correlation between both variables shows that there is a significant correlation between students writing ability and their vocabulary mastery, it has lies between 0,600 - 0,800 which is categorized as substantial.Keywords: correlation, writing, vocabulary, ability

Abstract

This study compares the English teaching skills between certified and non-certified English teachers and the endeavors are dominantly done by both in developing the English teaching skills. The causal-comparative design was used to investigate the candidate of Junior and Senior High Schools certified and non-certified English teachers in Bantaeng Regency based on their scores from two standardized instruments. Study result indicated that there was no significant different English teaching skills between certified and non-certified English teachers. In addition, the dominant endeavors done by the certified and non-certified English teachers has revealed that most of certified and non-certified English teachers were active in cognitive stage rather than in practice and evaluation stage. Based on the findings, the researcher deduced that both certified and non-certified English teachers in Bantaeng Regency have no significant difference in the English teaching skills because of both English teachers have similar endeavors in developing their skills.Keywords: English teaching skills, certified English teachers, non-certified English teachers, endeavors, developing skills

Abstract

The study used an experimental method namely a quasi-experimental design. The population of the study was consist of 260 subjects from ten classes. The sample one was purposive sampling. The researcher collected data by using four instruments, they are the questionnaire, observation, and scale of behavior. The result showed that Mozart gave effect in reducing subjects’ anxiety of English speaking in public. It was proved by the total subjects is 8 students for very high anxiety and 7 students for very low anxiety before given treatments; while after given treatment, there are only 4 subjects for very high anxiety and 10 subjects for very low anxiety (look at table 7 and 9). In other hands, the data support by Paired Sample Correlation table showed that score between pretest and posttest by 32 respondents = 0,874; the significance or p was 0,000. The norm said that if the significance showed under 0, 05 (p 0, 05), it means that H1 is accepted and H0 is refused. So, the conclusion for the research is Mozart Effect can reduce the students’ anxiety of English speaking in public. Abstract

The research aimed at finding out the improvement of students’ speaking ability through Case Presentation at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Libureng Bone. The method of this research was classroom action research that consisted of two cycles. One cycle consisted of four meetings. It means that there were eight meeting in two cycles. This classroom action research was done at SMA Negeri 1 Libureng Bone for English subject. The subject research was 39 students of senior high school in 2012-2013 academic years. Those consist of 26 women and 13 men. Instruments are speaking test and observation sheet. The findings of this research were the improvement of the students’ speaking ability in terms of speaking accuracy and speaking fluency in which the mean score of diagnostic test was 5.30, the mean score of cycle I was 6.27 and the mean score of cycle II was 7.29. The result above indicated that there was significant improvement of the students’ speaking ability in terms of speaking accuracy and speaking fluency in the application of case presentation method at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Libureng Bone.
