Abstract

ABSTRACT Children under five years means the grow than development of rapid and highly important and as a foundation that determines the quality of the success orgeneration of the nation. Ages 0-24 months is a period of rapid growth and development, and often termed as the golden period and at the same time ascritical period. Golden period can be realized if at this time infants and children receive appropriate nutrition for optimal growth and development. The objective of this study was to describe the pattern of growth of children under  five in families of smokers and non smokers in Berastagi district Karo regency. This  research was a descriptive cross sectional design. Data was collected by interviews and questionnaires to help 158 respondents with children under five in the region of sub-district health centers Berastagi in March - June 2014. The results showed that, based on health status (ARI) in  children  under five which suffered the most number of ARI were the family that 57%  of smokers and non-smokers in the family 43%. Growth of children under five based on weight forage, children under five malnutrition 84.2% of smokers in the family, good nutrition 54.3% innon-smokers and families over 100% under weight children in the family non smokers. Growth of infants based on height for age, very short 100%  on a family of smokers, 64.4% short was in the family of smokers and 58.9% of normal height in the family non smokers. Growth in weight for toddler height, very skinny 89% is in the family of smokers, 73% thin nerth ere on a family of smokers, 56% of normal non-smokers there are in the family and 64% obese non-smokers in the family. It is expected to provide input to the clinic to increase public knowledge through education about the dangers of cigarette smoke which give seffect to the growth of infants to increase the awareness of parents, families and communities. It is expected that all members of the family and the community, especially the head of the family to not smoke in the house, even there searcher is hoping that the head of the family can stop the habit of smoking for the health of them selves and their family members, especially baby under five.
