Abstract

The objective of this research were to evaluate the effect of paper deinking on physical and mechanical properties of plastic composite board (fiber plastic composite). Deinking process using detergents with a concentration of 0%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%. Clean pulp produced an acceptable material, while lathering ink that leaves the pulp was an rejected ingredient. The resulting composite board tested and their mechanical and physical properties compared to standard JIS A 5905-2003 hardboard S20 and JIS A 5908-2003 particleboards type 13. The results showed that the value of the density, moisture content, water absorption, thickness swelling, MOE, MOR, and IB were respectively from 0,61-0,69; 4,58-5,93; 29,62-39.81; 5,09-9,89; 0,96-1,22; 6,56-8,70; and 0,77-0,98. Testing that fulfill the standard requirement were testing the density, thickness swelling, and internal bond. Keywords: plastic composite board, polyethylene plastic, detergent concentration, physical and mechanical properties

Abstract

As one of the common facilities, Elementary Schools are very important and should be maintained in order to remain in good condition. Termites attacked on the building at the moment was a very big deal considering that the higher the intensity of their attacked and expanded so that the value of lost due to termite attacked tend to increase from year to year. This study aimed to get the value of economic losses termite attacked and get a map of the distribution of species of termites in the Elementary School building in the western of Pekanbaru. The research was conducted from July 2014 until August 2014 by using purposive sampling method 15% of the total number of Elementary Schools in the city of Pekanbaru. Data collected by direct observation and field interviews using questionnaires. The data obtained were then mapped using GIS (Geographic Information System). The results obtained showed that minor damage by 60% and were 40% moderate damage. Economic losses termites attacked against the State Elementary School building is Rp334.130.000 for tembesu wood standard and Rp246.367.000 for meranti wood standard. Types of termites that attacked the Elementary School Buildings were Microtermes inspiratus for subterranean termites and Cryptotermes cynocephalus for dry wood termites.   Keywords: Termites, economic losses, school buildings, GIS

Abstract

To reduce the  waste of oil palm trunks can be done by changing oil palm trunks into particle board. One way to improve the quality of particle board is by doing coating treatment of acrylic. This study evaluated the best acrylic level in improving the quality of oil palm trunk particle board with isocyanate as the adhesive. Boards were made with size  25 cm x 25 cm x 1 cm with a target density of 0.7 g/cm3, felts temperature 160º and pressure 25 kg/cm2 for 3 minutes. Physical and mechanical properties were compared with SNI 03-2105-2006. The treatment variations were acrylic levels (0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%) with 3 repetitions. Results showed that the values of the density, moisture content, water absorption, thickness swelling, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity and internal bond were respectively 0,46-0,60 g/cm3, 10,52-11,01%, 5,32-55.35%, 2,37-6,40%, 26,45-60,87 kg/cm2, 2619,15-5092,82 kg/cm2 and 2,28-4,61 kg/cm2. All result values of physical properties testing except value of the moisture content achieved the standards of SNI 03-2105-2006. Instead, all result values of mechanical properties testing did not achieve the standards of SNI 03-2105-2006. The results showed that the particle boards with acrylic coating treatment has better quality than the particle boards without the acrylic coating treatment for the entire physical properties testing in addition to moisture content. Best acrylic level for the coating treatment of oil palm trunk particle board is 15%.
