Abstract

Tahura Bukit Barisan has good variety potentials to be developed. However, Tahura Bukit Barisan’s management can not get maximal result if the rate of human’s perception and participation haven’t been known yet. Whereas, the rate of people’s perception and participation in existing can be base for UPT Tahura Bukit Barisan manager to empower community, so that they will be more active in managing and using forest potency. So, the rate of community perception and participation of Tahura Bukit Barisan have to been known. Sampling technique uses purposive sampling. This research uses primer and secondary data. Primer data collected from survey and direct interview by quisioner. Then, counted the rate of community perception and participation by using formula, then it will be grouped into three categories namely high, medium and low. The result showed the level of peoples in Dolat Rayat, Jarang Uda and Merdeka Village are grouped into good perception, but rate of community participation for some activities such as planning, actuating, and evaluation are low.Keyword : Tahura Bukit Barisan, Perception, Participation

Abstract

The close interrelation between forests and rural communities living around the forest was important in its development. Forest has an aspect of economics as need of the communities around the forest. The aim of this research was to determine people's perception of the importance of forests and land use as natural resources that exist in the communities around the Tahura Bukit Barisan, especially Doulu Village (Sub District of Berastagi) and Jaranguda Village (Sub District of Merdeka) Karo Regency. This research was conducted from April to May 2013. The method used Multidisciplinary Landscape Assessment (MLA), which is a combination of the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and Pebble Distribution Method (PDM). To collect public perception, thi research used a list of questions. The number of samples required is 60 households, with details of 30 households each village. The results showed that the categories of land use was considered to be the most important was “housing area” according to male and female, with an average (31.5%) according to men and (33.6 %) according to women in the village of Doulu and Jaranguda. They need housing area importantly as village becouse it’s need to the center of economics activity, culture, education and social can be obtained.Keywords: Perception, Land use, MLA

Abstract

Arenga pinnata is a forest plant that has a lot of advantages but can not be utilized yet completely by the local community. This research conducted in Bukum and Suka Maju village from March to May 2013. This research aimed to determine the distribution and economic value of Arenga pinnata. Sampling was done by purposive sampling technique to select the respondents and to determine the distribution of the Arenga pinnata by plotting at each height class as much as 2 plot using random line. Market price approach technique used to determine the economic values. The results of this research showed that the distribution of Arenga pinnata is obtained and dominant grew at the altitude of 600-800 meters above sea level, while the highest economic value of Arenga pinnata is brown sugar (Rp. 333.600.000/year for 31 farmers) and the lowest economic value is palm wine (Rp 39.360.000/year for 10 farmera). The marketing channels of Arenga pinnata involved Arenga pinnata farmers, brown sugar and palm wine producers, collector agents and consumers.Keywords : Aren, Arenga pinnata, distribution, economic value
