Abstract

Grain quality and aroma are important characteristics of rice that affect consumer acceptance. This research was conducted to study the grain quality and aroma of aromatic new plant type (NPT) promising rice lines. Thirty five lines as well as Ciherang and Sintanur varieties were planted at Bogor and Pusakanagara, West Java in the dry season (DS) 2009 and wet season (WS) 2009. Three methods, i.e. leaf aroma tested with KOH, rice aroma tested in the test tube, and cooked rice aroma test, were used to evaluate the aroma of the lines. The results showed that line B11742-RS*2-3-MR-34-1-2-1 was aromatic identified using different methods. The line had long, slender, and small chalkiness grains, high percentage of head rice, high amylose, and hard texture. Lines IPB 140-F-6, B11249-9C-PN-3-3-2-2-MR-1, and B11955-MR-84-1-4 also had a high aroma score and grain yield. Testing leaf aroma with KOH can be used as early selection method in breeding program for aromatic lines. Lines derived from aromatic parents from highlands of South Sulawesi did not show consistent aroma under three testing methods. Those tested lines had good grain quality, both physical and cooked rice quality.

Abstract

Biofortification is a process of increasing the nutritional content of agricultural commodities to meet the preferences of consumers who in recent years have begun to tend to have a healthy lifestyle. Specialty rice can include aromatic rice, sticky rice, pigmented rice and nutritious rice (rice containing zinc, iron or high anthocyanin). The limited superior varieties of upland rice causes the need to increase genetic diversity through the formation of based populations with conventional crossing. The hybridization block and F1 planting were conducted at MT 1 2019 in Muara Experimental Station-ICRR, Bogor. Crossing parents consist of advanced lines, introduced lines, local varieties and national varieties. Development of upland rice based population in MT 1 2019 resulted 64 crossbreeding combinations and 41 crossbreeding combinations among them aimed at obtaining special quality upland rice consisting of 24 single crosses, eight back crosses, seven top crosses and two double crosses. Whereas for F1 planting, upland rice for MT 1 2019 consisted of 129 numbers and 53 of them aimed at good quality rice. Of the 53 F1 numbers, 42 numbers were selected, which continued to become the bastar population (F2) in MT 2 2019 with the modification-bulk selection method.

Abstract

Preliminary Yield Trials and Grain Quality of 21 Promising Hybrid Rice. Hybrid rice varieties are alternative technology for increasing national rice productivity.  Heterosis effect from the hybrid F1 can increase yield potential 15% more than inbred rice varieties. The objectives of this experiment were to test the yield and rice quality of some hybrid rice varieties, compared with the three check varities i.e. IR64, Memberamo, and Maro. This experiment was conducted at Muara Experimental Farm, Bogor during wet season 2002/2003 (December-May). A Randomized Complete Blocked Design in three replications was used for this experiment. The result shows that the yield of hybrid rice combinations H-27, H-28, H-29, H-30, H-31, H-32, H-35, H-37, H-38, H-39, H-40, H-41, H-42, H-43, H-45, H-47, H-48 had short growth duration and have erect leaf appearance, but most of them had less resistance to pests and diseases caused by bacteria, and low percentage of grain content. The yield of these hybrids except H-27 and H-49 were lower than the check varieties and all of the hybrid rice tested in this experiment were good in terms of cooking quality. H-27, H-30, H-34, H-41, H-45 dan H-49 could be tested in the advance yield trials.   Key words: hybrid rice, preliminary yield, grain quality

Abstract

Aromatic new plant type (NPT) rice lines were selected to obtain high yielding and aromatic lines. The objectives of the research were to study the yield stability and adaptability of 35 NPTrice lines across different environment, with Ciherang and Sintanur as check varieties. The lines planted at two locations, Bogor and Pusakanagara in two seasons (2009 dry and wet seasons, DS-WS). The experiment used randomized complete block design (RCBD), with three replications. The 21-day-old seedlings were planted with spacing of 20 cm x 20 cm, with a plot size of 2 m x 5 m. Yield stability and adaptability were estimated by using coeffi cient regression (bi) and general mean of yield by Finlay-Wilkinson method. Combined analysis of variance showed that lines (G), environment (E), and the G x E interaction were signifi cantly different. Lines showed different stability and adaptability . Several lines yielded higher than Ciherang variety . Nine lines were classifi edasstable and widely adapted at the marginal environment, i.e IPB 116-F-3-1, IPB 117-F-4-1, IPB-117-F-14-2, IPB-117-F-15-2, IPB-117-F-17-5, IPB 140-F-1-1, 140-F-IPB, 2-1, IPB 140-F-3, and IPB 149-F-2. Lines IPB 113-F-2, IPB 140-F-4, IPB 140-F-6, IPB 140-F-7, and B11738-MR-Si-1-2-1-2 were not stable and adapted only in optimum environmental condition (bi > 1) while IPB 116-F-46-1, IPB-117-F 17-4, IPB-117-F 18-3 and B11955-MR-84-1-4 has the value of bi < 1 or adaptable to marginal environments. Keywords: aromatic rice, NPT rice, yield stability

Abstract

Improvement upland rice lines are faced with the diversity of physical and ecobiological characteristics of dry land, including acidic-dry land. An alternative approach to optimize upland rice cultivation in acidic-dry land is the selection of adaptive varieties. The aim of this experiment was to obtain lines that have superior performance and yield on acidic-dry land, as well as good rice quality. A total of 36 lines of upland rice, including four check varieties, were selected at Tamanbogo, Lampung on rainy season (November 2017-March 2018). The genetic parameters estimation showed that flowering age, harvest age, weight of 1,000 grains and yield can be used as selection criteria. Based on these selection criteria, four lines were selected, namely B15231-MR-10-1, B15053F-PWR-2, B14908C-MR-1-25-1-3 and B15344B-TB-34. These lines had grain yields that were not significantly different from the best check variety Inpago 8 (3.84 ton ha-1), average resistant to leaf blast (score 1), highly resistant to neck blast (score 0), and moderately tolerant of Al. Additionally, these lines had medium grain with small-medium chalkiness (MMS-LMM), amylose content between 20-23% with soft-medium rice texture. One selected line, namely B15344B-TB-34, was identified as a red-pericarp rice. Keywords: aluminum toxicity, blast disease, drought, grain quality, selection criteria
