Abstract

This study aimed for investigating: (1) whether or not Six Thinking Hat strategy significantly improved student’s speaking achievement, and (2) whether or not there was any significant difference in students’ speaking achievement between those who were taught by using Six Thinking Hats strategy and those who were not. A quasi experimental research design was administered. The samples were taken by using purposive sampling, consisting of 34 students for experimental group and 29 students for control group. Spoken test was used as data collection technique. To verify the hypotheses, the data from the pre-test and post-test from the two groups were analyzed by paired sample t-tst and independent sample t-test. Based on the results of the study, it was revealed that Six Thinking Hats strategy could significantly improve students’ speaking achievement. The result of paired sample t -test confirmed that there was a significant progress of students’ speaking achievement in giving opinion after they got the intervention of this strategy. Next, the result of Independent-sample t-test showed that there was a significant difference between students’ speaking achievement for both of groups. Experimental group outperformed control group in speaking achievement

Abstract

Abstract: This study was aimed at examining the application of differentiated instruction in enhancing vocabulary mastery to the students of TK ARKAAN Palembang. This study was a classroom action research.  Test and observation were the instruments to collect the data. This study consisted of two cycles, cycle I and cycle II. Planning, implementation, observation, and reflection were the phases of the study. Thirty three of students of TK ARKAAN Palembang were the sample of the study. Data calculation showed that there was a significant improvement of students’ vocabulary mastery, the means score in cycle I was 48.48 and in cycle II was 86.36. In other words, the improvement of students’ vocabulary score was 37.88. Then, there was also significant improvement of students learning completeness. The learning completeness in cycle I was 24.25% and cycle II was 90.90% and the improvement was 66.65%.  In other words, vocabulary mastery of students at TK ARKAAN Palembang was enhanced by using differentiated instruction. The students’ perception toward the implementation of differentiated instruction was good. Keywords: vocabulary mastery, differentiated instruction, kindergarten students

Abstract

This study highlighted the implementation of jigsaw strategy to improve eleventh graders’ reading comprehension at SMA Karya Ibu Palembang. Jigsaw is one of learning strategies under cooperative learning method that promotes group work and problem solving practice among the group members. This strategy encourages each member to focus on solving a given task in a reading practice. The objective of this study was to find out whether or not jigsaw strategy could significantly improve students’ reading comprehension of explanation text. It examined the influence of Jigsaw strategy on students’ reading achievement. Pre-experimental research design was administered as the research method since it had no control group involved. 35 students of eleventh grade that categorized low in reading achievement, participated as the sample of this study. A reading comprehension test, consisting of 20 items of multiple choice, used as the data collection technique. The obtained data was analyzed using Paired Sample T-Test. Research finding showed that Jigsaw strategy could significantly improve students’ reading comprehension.  The result of Paired Sample T-Test revealed that the value of t-obtained (8.864) was higher than the value of t-table (2.032) and the significance level (2-tailed) was 0.000. It indicated that jigsaw strategy contributed significant influence toward students’ reading comprehension.Keywords: jigsaw, reading comprehension, cooperative learning

Abstract

This research highlighted the application of gallery walk to enhance students’ achievement in writing a recount text. The goal of this research are to assess whether or not the use of gallery walk could foster the students’ writing score and to find the significant difference in students’ recount text writing achievement between those who were taught by using gallery walk and that of those who were not. This research used a quasiexperimental research design with no random sampling. The samples were taken by using purposive sampling, consisting of 37 students for the experimental and control groups. The data were collected by using a written test and administered before and after the treatment. To verify the hypotheses, the data were analyzed using paired sample t-test and independent sample-test and the calculation was done using SPSS program. The result showed that the promotion of gallery walk could foster students’ achievement in writing a recount text and there was a significant difference between posttest results of both groups.

Abstract

Many research have proved that reading interest can influence the way someone thinks. It is crucial to promote critical thinking skills in higher education level. This study aimed to find out the level of students’ critical thinking skills and to reveal the association between reading interest and critical thinking skill. This study used correlational research design. Fiftyseven tertiary students of English Education Department at Tridinanti University participated as the sample which were selected by using total sampling technique since the population size was small. The data were collected by administering a questionnaire of reading interest and critical thinking test. After gathering the data, it was analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment to examine the association between the students’ reading interest and their critical thinking skill. The data obtained were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment. The result of correlational analysis revealed that there was a very weak correlation between reading interest and critical thinking skill.

There were 37 students participating as the sample of the study chosen by using purposive sampling. In collecting the data, a questionnaire of reading habit and a critical reading test were distributed. A correlational analysis using Pearson Product Moment was applied to seek the association between the variables measured. Based on the data analysis result, it was found that students’ reading habit was not significantly correlated with students’ critical reading skills
