Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the English National Final Examination for Junior High School. Validity and reliability are the two kinds of characteristics of a good test which are concerned. Since the five packages of the test are the same in content and only different on the placement of the items, so it is considered to take only one package becomes sample. This study was analyzed by using the descriptive method. Content validity was analyzed by comparing the materials in the syllabus to the items of the test, and construct validity was analyzed by comparing the indicators in the syllabus to the items of the test. While the reliability was analyzed by using Kuder-Richardson Formula (KR20). The result of the study shows that the English National Final Examination for Junior High School was valid and reliable. The content validity shows 100% valid, and the construct validity shows 100% valid. While the reliability shows coefficient 0.89, and it is reliable. So, the English National Final Examination for Junior High School has fulfilled the characteristics of a good test.

Abstract

The study aims at describing the types of cohesive devices used by the third semester students of English Department of Tarbiyah Faculty of State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) of Palangka Raya who took Essay Writing Course. The subjects of the study were thirteen (13) of the third semester students’ of English department of Tarbiyah Faculty of State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) of Palangka Rayawho took Essay Writing Course. In order to get the data, the students were asked to write expository essays by choosing the following topics which include; (1) why the teachers should be profesional, (2) the use of digitial technology in learning and (3) how to prevent forest from a fire. The data were analysed based on Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) framework on cohesive devices covering  reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion. The study shows that (1) the types of cohesive devices to be found in in the students’ essays are conjunction (43.25%), reference (33.73%) and lexical cohesion (23.01%). Although there are a few cohesive devices to be used, the majority of the students’opinion essaya fail to achieve cohesion.

Abstract

The study was aimed at knowing how students’ perceptions of the use of video as medium of learning in speaking class. Qualitative descriptive was utilized as a research method. The researcher selected 15 students of English Education IAIN Palangka Raya from 3 classes which were chosen 5 students in each class by using purposive sampling. To gain the data, the researcher used interview and documentation. The result showed the students’ perceptions of the use of video as a medium of learning in speaking class had good result.  Most students said the use of video as a medium of learning in speaking class was effective, flexible, and practice medium. It was also able to increase the students’ speaking skill which was called positive attitude. However, two students disagreed the use of video which was called negative attitude. They mentioned video was ineffective in increasing speaking fluency and not too challenging. Keywords:  Students’ Perceptions, Video, Speaking Class
